I say equal to the national median, or maybe 1.5 times the median, but tied to the median in some way so politicians have an incentive to push for policies to raise wages. And not of working people, but of those who are unemployed as well.

A lot of employees earn a lot of money through tips. For example, waitresses I used to work for earned $200 in an 8 hour shift. The idea of tipping is that if you as a server work hard enough you will earn more money than a company can pay. The pay depends on your as the server at that point.

It is true. Lowering taxes means more investment, more growth, and more revenue. What is higher, 10% of 1000 or 50% of 100? Lowering the min. wage means more workers meaning they develop skills faster and can compete and produce more thus higher wages.
2
Because those are starting jobs or part time short term jobs. I earned the min. wage when I was a teen. I earn more now. If you are an adult trying to live off of those jobs than that is your fault.
2
True, but you don't accelerate the process.

spydr86, it doesn't work like that. Even if it did with a $9.50/hr min. wage it will, at best, grow the economy by 0.1%. That is why no one mentions it. Christina Romer brought that point up showing there will be no economic growth. Also, if those workers are going to spend that money that quickly then they are poor for a reason.

So place a cap on success? If someone provides enough for society to earn that much that's good. If you place a cap on success people will stop working. For example, if you cap my pay at 8 hours I will stop working at 8 hours. No more productivity.

Baron, on your story, there are two points 1. We have a large group of people who refuse to work. The KFC down the street is hiring and no one is applying. 2. If that company paid the lowest possible then skilled workers will not work there. That company paying low wages is the reason why they cannot fill vacancy. Skilled workers do not want to work for so little.

RandomGuy7092, 1. It isn't bullshit. There are jobs out there, people just refuse to work. 2. I never said that

Actually a lot of people earn more through tips than they would with tipping. For example, waitress at the place I worked at worked 8 hour shifts and earned almost $200. That is $25/hr.

If the server is being paid more than the price of food is higher. It is relevant.
1
Sure automation is inevitable, but you do not speed up the process by arbitrarily raising the min. wage. You allow it to gradually happen so the market can adjust.
1
David King, that is not an argument because a counter argument is that they found a high paying job so can those min. wage workers. Another argument is that people are stuck in min. wage jobs for a reason.

Kyle has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to the min. wage.

"Fuck paying people based on merit, amirite?" I agree. Everyone should be paid a flat rate of $40,000 a year, that's it. Except for politicians like Bernie Sanders who deserves three homes. But everyone else no matter if you are a fast food worker or an engineer should be paid the same.
1
CutThroatJuggalo, McCain did not run a campaign centered around "fuck the rich" like Bernie did. Bernie should take more action. Instead he made a million selling his book that was sold in Walmart. He could have given it away for free.
1
Walmart just raised their wages for new employees.
