Factory workers don't earn the min. wage, they earn much more with benefits.

It isn't that simple. To start, even at at a $9.50/hr min. wage it will only grow the economy by 0.25%, at best. Next, many businesses will cut hours first before raising prices. Finally, most do not want to pay higher prices, including me. The price increases will hurt the poor where most do not earn the min. wage to begin with but earn more. There is a lot more to it but the idea that raising the min. wage strengthens the economy is not true as it never had happened.

Seth the Wicked, the term "living wage" is 100% subjective. Statistically most on min. wage are not poor to begin with.

"To all of you naysayers, I'll say it again, we've been doing business friendly economic policy for decades" We haven't. We have had crony capitalism for decades.
2
D LG, also, raising the min. wage only enforces how much is paid per hour, not per week. If hours are cut what have you solved?

Simple logic is that if something cost too much you don't buy it. Same with employment.

" prices would go up pennies on the dollar. " It isn't that simple. Most companies would cut employees first.

Ylze Tyr, many factors influence overall unemployment. Increases in the min. wage have led to job losses for unskilled workers.

A major issue with polls is that they do lack details. Also, most people answering them know very little about the issue to begin with. These polls over simplify complex issues. Using your medicare for all example, those polls leave out tax increases. It also leaves out numerous other drawbacks from such a system such as the possibility of less R&D, more wait times, many providers who refuse to take medicare etc. You say that it could reduce co-pays and deductibles, that is a fair argument. And Medicare for all will benefit many in poverty. However, there are many drawbacks. In the big picture the issue is very complex which is why going off of polls is very flawed due to how simple it makes these issues out to be.

It is true that the questions are phrased to choose the lesser of two evils, and based on the questions most people will pick "raise the min. wage" as the second option makes it seem like that not supporting the min. wage is not a moral choice. That min. wage workers are poor (for the most part they aren't), and that you are the greedy one for not wanting to pay more in prices. It was a poor phrased question and should not be taken seriously.

Vox recently made a funny video about David Hogg. To be honest I love that kid. As long as he is the face for gun control no laws are going to be passed.
1
The idea that prices are going up is mainly a myth.
1
Ben Chesterman, there is more to food prices than the min. wage. Also, Australia does have higher prices.
1
If you raise the min. wage you price a lot of low skilled workers out of the market so now they are earning zero. Also, if you are earning the min. wage you should not be starting a family.

Ma Sa, they do.

Ylze Tyr, I can live off of $6/hr if I needed to in the city I live in and still have close to $200 a month to save. When I was younger earning $8/hr I was able to buy a $6000 car. The term "living wage" is 100% subjective, period.
1
"the living wage of one person living in a particular area is exactly the same as a living wage for anybody else in that area. " Person A lives in a city and earns $10/hr and lives alone. Person B lives right next door to Person A in a same apartment and earns $8/hr but has a spouse that earns $80,000 a year. Who has a better lifestyle?
1
" So, if you're so certain that low wages are great for the economy, why haven't we seen any real growth in this long-term low wage environment?" Because we don't have low wages.

"why are half of all US workers living in poverty. " The poverty rate is around 15%. So already you are wrong. How should I take you seriously?
1
If these min. wage workers are poor, and if they spend their new money they receive due to a higher wage that quickly than there is a reason why they are poor to begin with. As opposed to saving that money and investing it they are quickly spending it. They are poor for a reason if that is the case.
1
"Where did this idea even come from? We are talking about jobs that are vital to a multi billion dollar industry, why shouldn't they make enough to live on?" Those jobs are not "vital" and can easily be replaced. That is why they pay so low. Also, the idea came from the fact that min. wage jobs are usually first jobs for people just entering the market, typically teens.
1
Lord Nekomimi, I earn $23,000 a year. I can pay my bills.
1
" Ricky says min wage jobs are not to live on, but someone still needs to fill these full-time positions" Most people, as in over 95%, who earn the min. wage do not work full time.
1
"They're not poor because they keep spending their money immediately; they're spending their money immediately because they're poor. How is that such a difficult concept?" But they have enough to live off of as they are living. Now you give them more, they should stay within their means and save the extra for something bigger to advance them.
1
strikevipermkll, I have worked with servers and I know most don't report their income for taxes. I have a job where I write off a lot to pay less in taxes as well. Also, I never said you should pay more in taxes. I support the tipping sector of the market.

Thomas, there are many arguments for and against the min. wage It is far from "common sense".
