It is actually the other way around. What has Cornel West ever done for the black community or the community in general? All he does is run his mouth. He never pushes for action. He just virtue signal.

@confusedarmchairphilosopher I do a lot with my time. I am going to, here later, work on a letter of recommendation for one of my former students. My point is that the far left here are a mess and causing the problems we have now. They deny reality and always contradict themselves. Take that a few weeks ago they were against protests saying it will spread the virus. Now they support them. Take how people like Kyle ripped on the armed protests in MI and many were saying they were white so nothing happened. But recently blacked armed protests did the same thing and guess what, nothing happened to them. I push people to look at the facts and think about them. Instead you get people acting like West here, giving nothing but talking points and going crazy.

@ahauckify how is he opening people's eyes with talking points like "living wage" and claiming the system is racist despite the fact that he, as a black man, has a PhD from Princeton? What will change will be having a conversation and stop treating blacks as inferiors via the soft bigotry of low expectations. I interact blacks often and guess what, I treat them no different than I do whites. But when UCLA bans a professor for doing the same thing that shows how racist the left is.

@IWearShaqs activists groups that accomplished what? To him racism is still a problem, so apparently those groups accomplished nothing. Anyone can get a group of fools to rally together. Why doesn't he use his so call intelligence, or a lawyer friend he surely met at Harvard or Yale to comb through the legal system and push to change it?

@confusedarmchairphilosopher the MI protesters had many reasons to protest. Businesses were going under and people were losing money. More information is coming out almost daily that the virus is not that deadly and we should open up. Many experts have said we overreacted but most on the left ignore them. So no, one can easily argue they were not overreacting. I can also argue that the current protesters are overreacting. There are hundreds of millions of interactions between cops and civilians a year. There are around 1000 deaths by cops a year, almost all justified. So is police brutality a major concern or simply rare events that are isolated? Take killings of unarmed black individuals. In 2019 there were 10. Of those seven were justified. Of the others one was accidental by a black cop, and the other two led to murder charges on the cops. But people are burning down buildings and rioting and taking over blocks of cities as if this is a major issue. Also, what West said is vague. Define "living wage". How will he go about building more housing? With education Title I schools receive more money via the Title I program of the federal government. It is more complex than what West makes it out to be.

What is ironic is that they both write books and give speeches on how terrible and dangerous the US government is, but then turn around and want to grant it more power.

The guy isn't wrong. All West has is talking points. He spent time in Harvard and Yale. Surely he has friends who are lawyers where they can dig into the legal system, find flaws, and change it in court. Instead he just spouts talking points and virtue signals. Talk is cheap, actions speak louder.

@applecatnyango I can, define a "living wage". He says we need more housing, ok, how? Yes, he has personal connections. He is clearly passionate about an issue but refuses to use his resources to make a difference. At this point he is all talk and not actions. I have done a lot more compared to West to make a difference. I have actually done actions to change people's lives and progress. What has he actually done? Tell me.

Public housing has been a disaster in many cases as the people who live there do not take care of the homes leading to the destruction of the homes. My idea of actions is not corruption. It is using knowledgeable people to comb through the legal system and finding flaws along with educating others on it. What actions has West taken? As far as for me, I have done a lot of work outside of academics and actually interacted with the common man. When has West done that? Again, what has he done?

@applecatnyango You can't define a "living wage" as it is vague. Defense spending for the past decades has been cut where social welfare programs spending has been going up. "Using personal connections to influence policy changes is still corruption." No it isn't. It is using your resources to your advantage. So when you ask for a letter of recommendation is that corruption? "We have no shortage of criticisms toward our broken justice system but who can actually act and change them?" By using legal experts and arguing in court. It happens often. "Civil rights activism and political critic among other things." Yes, all talk, not action. Anyone can run their mouth. He runs his mouth and then goes and enjoys his fancy home. Why isn't he out there with the protestors?

Cthulhu In the deep who says I support Shapiro and Crowder? With Crowder, though, he at least interacts with the public. Rush Limbaugh donated to a lot of charities. But again, when did I say I ever support them? West is a black man who was able to rise up in our society, that he claims is racist, and earn a PhD. And as a result he uses his position of power to say black people are victims and cannot succeed. How is that productive?

@dongerlord7874 I am pursuing a PhD in physical chemistry, a degree that requires objective evidence when I publish papers. I have worked in academics long enough to see that. To get a PhD in philosophy what do you have to do really? For me I have to do original research, publish it, and carve out new information in the scientific community that has not been done yet. But whatever, listen to a guy who got a PhD in a field that required no objectivity.

@dongerlord7874 philosophy being non-objective does, at the very least, lower its value. A lot of people can understand philosophy without studying it formally at a university. With my field of physical chemistry I have to use specialized equipment, collect data, analyze it, describe it in detail and publish it. That requires work. What does it take to study philosophy? As for your point of "If you studied philosophy, you would understand the stupidity of that argument" That is simply not true. I actually understand philosophy very well. As someone who mainly studied physics in my life there is a large overlap between physics and philosophy. I will apply some here. West is a guy who has spent his entire life behind books and in academics and not in society, thus he does not understand the common man. This is actually very common in academics where professors become so indulged in their work they hardly interact with the society and the common man. That is why West has such a strong opinion on an issue but is so wrong on it and also does not understand the complexity of the issues and only has talking points. What has West done to actually help society? And what has he done outside of academics?

@XxThunderflamexX I can give examples. What is a "living wage"? How do you create more public housing? Simply saying we need to so x, y and z with no actual details in how is being vague. West is the type of person who will stand in front of a burning building saying we need to put out the fire but now say how.

@dongerlord7874 I never said philosophy is not important, I am saying that a PhD in philosophy is not challenging compared to one in physics or biology. I study philosophy because it is valuable, but why should I spend a lot of time writing a 200 page dissertation to prove that I understand it? I do understand the common man. Has West been a janitor in his life? I have. Has he ever worked with rural individuals who simply want to live a simple life? I have. Here is West saying the system is racist, but how much has he actually interacted with the system? What has he done outside of academics? Very little if anything. I substitute teach on the side and interact with the general public in that way. I am a sports official in multiple sports and interact with people in different fields that way. I worked a game were I am a graduate student, another official is a teach, another is a lawyer, another is a truck driver, etc. Think about that variety. Has West ever worked with people like that, the common man? I doubt it. I have. This is a problem with the left, they do not interact with the common man and they wonder why, despite being the loudest of the bunch, they constantly lose.

Griffiith I listened to what he said. He is simply saying talking points such as "living wage". Ok? What is that? Based on what? How do you determine that? Also, working in academics as long as I have I realized that achievements there are essentially meaningless. When UCLA just suspended a professor for deciding not to be a racist that says something. In my university they had over 2 months to make a plan to reopen for the virus but it has been a mess. But within a week time I received four emails from admin talking about racism and their plan to account for it. In short, academics are great a virtue signaling, not actual accomplishments. You list all those rewards but zero accomplishments. Again, what has he actually done besides run his mouth?

michael piro exactly. I call him the black Noam Chomsky. A guy with basically a worthless PhD that sounds smart and writes well but when you look past that he is not that bright. Him, like Chomsky, spent years writing books and giving speeches on how bad the US is, but then turn around and what to give it more power. It makes zero sense.

@jakedemedeiros9978 a living wage is not defined. It depends on several factors. For example, I can walk to work thus my "living wage" is lower compared to my friend who drives. And what fundraisers has West done? Care to give me a list? As for help black youth become educated, I work at a university where I teach, so I do. And I treat all my students as equals. I give equal advice to all. Why doesn't West give speeches and advice to black youths in how they, like him, can rise up and become successful such as getting a PhD? Instead he just labels them as victims. How does that help them? When they fail they will blame others as opposed to learning.

@confusedarmchairphilosopher I have supported many leftists ideas. I have supported body cams for example with police and reform in training. I have supported a public option in healthcare as long as it is ran locally. As for the black community, I treat them as equals. I do not treat them as inferiors. That is how I help them. I treat them no differently than anyone else.

Or what about someone that is blessed with high athletic skills? They have a much better shot at being a professional athlete. So that not equal in opportunity. What changed? Nothing according to them. Why? Because instead of engaging in an intellectual conversation they just dismiss others. And again, you bring up equality of opportunity. How far are you willing to go? If someone has a gambling addiction and blows their money that way, do you give them a higher wage? That is the problem with the "living wage" argument. You are trying to micromanage a very complex issue.

@jakedemedeiros9978 to add, I really question if you are studying economics. I am pursuing an MBA and a part of that is to study some level of economics. In doing so we study the complexity of the issue. For example, one of my professor brought up the point that if you were to ask a common person if driving can be too safe they will say yes. But in reality the answer is now. How? Well, 40,000 people die a year in traffic accidents. If we were to make the max speed limit to be 20 MPH that will surely reduce that number to zero. However, what negative economic consequences will result from that? My point being is that you cannot just create this issue of a "living wage" as there is so much tied to it. What about businesses that cannot afford it? What about idea that a wage is how much is paid per hour but not per week, thus if hours are cut, than what? There is a lot to it. And again, you completely dismissed my point of equality of opportunity. How is it equal if someone is born with vast athletic abilities and I am not? Not to be rude but I really doubt you study economics. If so you are being misled.

West is a race baiter. Also, his PhD is not in a challenging field like the sciences. A PhD in Philosophy basically means all you have to do is smoke weed and write bullshit. Very little objectivity.
