Occasionally he will talk about a "living wage", but that's it.   41. I live in NV and right now Reno has a problem because so many students are leaving CA to attend college in Reno due to CA's university system sucks. That is the typical response I get from people from CA. Rent in Reno is now going up because we don't have enough places for people to live. I am on colleges and universities in CA quite often because of my job and campuses are not pretty at all compared to others in the country. They are terrible. Unless you are a grad student attending a place like Berkeley or Standford do not attend a CA university.

  53. x0acake, the problem with looking at other countries is that you start adding more and more variables. They are completely different than us and have more restrictions. For example, I forgot which country it was, but if you are applying for med school you can only apply to one a year. Thus if you are denied you have to wait another year before you can try again limiting your options. When I applied to grad school I applied to 12. Ten accepted me, one (John Hopkins) denied me, and one put me on the waiting list. So I had my choices which were to my advantage. You also have to consider their colleges function differently than ours. One example is that other countries don't have a program like the NCAA attached to it (Canada does to a point). There they account for different sizes of colleges with scholarship limits. How do you account for that is college is "tuition free"? That alone will be a mess, never mind everything else you have to deal with. The point is that with the US being as large as it is, and how different we are from other countries (that have populations smaller than some of our states), just looking at the US is all we need to do. And honestly, people who say "look at Europe" are typically the ones who know little about the situation all together and are just pull wool over people's eyes.

All you care to look at is "free college" and "gee, it so cheap!". On the UK, you can only apply to 5 colleges at a time where in the US you can apply to basically as many as you want. But you will also choose to ignore that because all you see are "free college". Other countries have restrictions that we don't have in the US. It isn't that simple as you and ol' Bernie try to make it sound.

  60. States don't have to adopt those standards. As is only around 15 states use NGSS and not every state uses CCSS. That is a big controversy of whether or not the federal government should be setting theses standards to begin with. States don't have to adopt them but the federal government basically says "uses these standards or get no money". A state like TX with the funds available can refuse to use those standards. But it does hold other states hostage to where they can implement something better but instead regress to the mean simply for money. I would support eliminating the department of ed., lower federal taxes or just giving the money to the states as is with no standards attached. Let the states completely decide. But as a whole the states set up the curriculum and do most of the funding. Even with CCSS they are so vague they can somewhat work around it. But more autonomy is key.

Thus the government give money to that school for that specific reason only. As I said, there is more to it than what you really know .

While there have been some parts of Obamacare taken from a republican plan of the 90s, the main one being the individual mandate, as a whole the entire plan is democrat, written by democrats, Romney was never asked about it, and was fully voted by democrats. People who keep pushing the idea that Obamacare was a republican plan are honestly, and not to be rude, radicals. I have no clue how anyone can say it was a republican plan when it was not voted by a single republican. Put it this way, if it is a republican plan than why are they pushing to remove it now?

  92. It isn't about tax dollars. Who is going to provide this "free college"? We lack professors, TAs, tutors, dorms, equipment, classrooms, and other resources. This is where Bernie and his supporters continue to fail at economics. If it were as easy as raising taxes we would have done it years ago.

We are guaranteed representation in the court of law, but will the lawyer we receive always be the best? Just saying we are guaranteed it doesn't mean that the quality will be high. On education, other countries have restrictions to keep enrollment low so that only the best can attend. In the US we allow almost anyone to attend which I agree with.   97. Critical_Goddess, read the book and see how it is written. They lay out their argument in a coherent, and intelligent way and properly cite their sources. That is one thing college should teach you, especially if you earn a doctorate. If you read the book you will most likely be surprised by their conclusion. Basically they say that there doesn't exist any evidence that the for profit system in healthcare is worse than what other countries have. But, as I can see, you clearly have never been put in such position thus you are satisfied with the whole "it is from AEI so it can't be trusted". Why? And how? It is published by AEI, it wasn't written by AEI. What is a non-partisan source at that point? Remember, this book cited peer reviewed journals.
