+DanteAtomosKageokami No, Bernie lied and needs to apologize. He won't of course because that is what career politicians do.

+DanteAtomosKageokami Bernie said that Trump wants lower wages. Trump was clearly talking about the min. wage. Bernie was expressing it as if Trump wanted all wages to be lowered. Bernie lied.

+adub4ever Because nothing positive comes from the min. wage.

+Gasai Yuno That is because min. wage increases have been small when compared to the entire economy. Christina Romer said that if the min. wage went up to $9.50/hr and assuming that all of the money went from the top to those workers with no hours cut, it will grow the economy 0.02%. That is it. Jobs increased during that time because the entire country was seeing job growth. There are numerous reasons why job growth happens. Since min. wage increases have been small all the effects get lost in the statistical noise. When that noise is removed by removing other variables in the economy one sees that there is job lost. When the min. wage goes up so does youth unemployment. Hours get cut and prices go up in businesses where the min. wage is effected the most.

+Gasai Yuno The economy does adapt with the new min. wage. It adapts with higher prices and less hours. And what are "basic needs"? You really have to stop using rhetoric here.

+greenjelly01 But you won't be paying 5 cents more on you pizza. What happens is that larger businesses, who possess the resources to stand poor economic times, will fire staff until the economy stabilizes. Thus there will be less jobs. Smaller businesses will have a greater chance of going bankrupt since they can't afford to fire staff and will most likely have to raise prices greater than 5 cents which will mean they will lose customers and thus less jobs. Herman Cain ran through the numbers with Bill Clinton in 1994 showing that he could not afford the healthcare bill which is similar to forcing him to raise wages. And he showed how in a competitive market you just can't raise prices and smaller companies will suffer. So that man won't be getting a higher wage. They will see their hours cut. And if you raise the min. wage enough the price of pizza will go up more than 5 cents. And not everyone willing to spend that extra 5 cents like you are.

+Gasai Yuno If all it took was a small increase in prices to pay a higher wage, then why don't these businesses increase prices already and collect that much more in profit? What you are saying is that they can increase prices and not lose any customers. So why don't they, being the greedy SOBs they are, and collect more profits? The answer is that it isn't that simple. The fact that you are thinking on such simple thoughts shows you know little about the issue.

+Jesse Sharp "If they're so weak that paying people a living wage is going to cause them to crumble then they're too poorly built to exist." This can easily be turned around. If a person does not generate enough wealth to justify a higher wage then they should not exist. You see how simple that was? Also the phrase "living wage" is pure rhetoric and means nothing.
2
+Gasai Yuno A business is ran by a person who invested their capital and time to build. A business owner can die and suffer as well. All you are saying after that is rhetoric. If you attack businesses they will just leave. Enjoy less jobs and productivity.

When broken down there is not one single good reason to even have a min. wage. One basic flaw of the min. wage is that you are enforcing how much is paid per hour but not per week. So if you raise the min. wage and hours are cut, then what? This thought that raising the min. wage will increase wages is simply not true. And what about those who lose jobs due to the min. wage increase? That makes their wage at $0/hr.

+Specopcleric While it is true that every business tries to minimize cost, due to competition they simply can't. If a business is not willing to spend on their company to improve, and that means pay their employees or hire more, then a rival company will swoop in and pay more. That attracts more employees that are better which means that company sees success. This is why less than 5% of workers earn at or below the min. wage, businesses already pay more. But there comes a point where they simply can't afford more. Compare it to this. You and me and other people would like to live in a better place, such as a better apartment. I pay $560/month in rent. I have a one bedroom with no washer and dryer in an OK neighborhood with limited crime. I can go cheaper and live in a studio or live in a neighborhood with higher crime and pay say $400/month. I can get a roommate in such a place and pay half that amount. But that means I am paying less for lower quality. I live where I live because I can afford it. I would love to have a larger place, such as a 2 bedroom to use one room to store some of my belongings and have more space, and have my own washer and dryer, but I simply can't afford it. The same is with wages and employees. A business is willing to pay more to get better workers but can only afford so much. Now even if I can afford it I will not be willing to live in a 5 bedroom mansion as a single guy because the upkeep of it would be rather hard and a living quarters of such size would be unnecessary. This is similar to why businesses sometimes won't hire someone with a PhD even though they are considered highly skilled and knowledgeable. Doing so will actually cause more problems even if the business can afford it. So this thought process that businesses will pay little and hire little is simply not so.

+Nathan Jones Cost of living is also higher in those countries. And productivity is lower in those countries.

+DanteAtomosKageokami Nope, Bernie says wages. Trump said the min. wage in an interview and in that speech everyone is referring to.

+Jesse Sharp Businesses do hire more so that their staff is not over worked. Same reason why businesses pay more so they can retain employees and get better employees. This idea that businesses hire as little as possible and pay as little as possible is simply not true. If a businesses hired little and over worked their employees they will just quit and go to another job. If employees become too expensive then they will cut staff. What they can also so is close down during certain hours and be open only during peak hours. For example a 24 hour restaurant can instead be open from 6 AM to 11 PM. And then 7 AM to 10 PM and so on. Businesses work off of very thin profit margins, they simply can't cut profits. The money is not there. A new min. wage will mean less hours for employees and higher prices for customers.

+Gasai Yuno Nobody has to work for a business, so how is the business screwing someone over? A person is willing to sell their skills and labor to a business and that business pays them. Everyone wants to make a profit, why shouldn't a business? A business does not have to exist. If people are going to attack a business then they can move or shut down leading to no jobs (sounds familiar) or not produce any goods people need. European countries do not have businesses that are required to provide a "livable wage" (a term which does not mean anything when broken down). As far as "basic need", education is not a basic need. What kind of shelter? What kind of healthcare? You are just shouting rhetoric at this point. What if someone needs a kidney? We lack organs. Who decides who gets a kidney?
