47% compared to 45% out of sample size of a few hundred? Don't jump to conclusions there.

Thongmaster, I disagree. There is value in being exposed to other subjects in college. Being educated is about exposing yourself to different ideas and practices and wanting to learn more about them and respecting them. A lot of my classes outside of my degree were interesting as I have a desire to learn. I have a physics degree but I enjoyed studying sociology and psychology.

College is an investment in one self. Everyone has access to K-12 education. After that you have to invest in yourself. Not just in time but in money. With college you learn how to manage a schedule, a budget, time, and develop connections. In comparison to high school you spend around 15 hours a week in class where in high school you spend around 30-35 hours a week in class. In grad school you spend around 6-9 hours a week. The rest is outside of class. If is your responsibility to study and learn the subjects are you taking. If you make college "tuition free" you remove many qualities of it. College isn't just sitting in a classroom and learning about a topic. After a K-12 education you should be able to do that on your own with most subjects taught in college. You should be able to go to your local library and read books. It is about all the qualities I mentioned and pursuing a long term goal. That makes you a better person overall and makes you a better employee.

"Besides, don't most state and public colleges spend the money they get on worthless football stadiums instead of better education?" Not true. Many colleges don't have stadiums. Stadiums are a one time purchase that is not expensive overall compared to something like a parking garage (they cost around $30,000 a parking space and have around 80 year pay off time). A lot of features in stadiums are from private donors. For example, in my undergrad the locker room, scoreboard, turf, new seats and press box was mostly donor money. A new indoor facility is donor money as well. The scoreboard was paid 100% by a local bank. I have worked in college football for 10 years and continue to do so.

How about you act like an adult and have an intelligent discussion in why many people do not support your ideas.

Earning a degree in art or women's study does not make you prepared for work. That is a waste of money.

It isn't. College is more than just going to class and listening to lectures. You are an adult in college. College, compared to K-12 education, is where you start to learn how to manage money, time, a schedule, and develop connections all while pursuing a long term goal. In K-12 education you are in classroom 6-7 hours a day five days a week. That is 30-35 hours. In college you are in a classroom around 15 hours a week over various times and maybe not every day depending on the schedule you choose. When you get to grad school it reduces down to possibly 6-9 hours a week where your schedule is even more flexible and your schooling is your research. You remove many of those qualities of college by making it free which lowers the value of it.

Frosty Lyfe, defense spending has been dropping for over 50 years.

"So you must want all students to have to pay their own tuition, Mrpink, correct? " I feel there is value in doing that, but I will not mandate it. It teaches money management skills. There are issues of parents paying for college as because of FERPA parents can't see grades. Many parents end up paying for a C student. But parents paying is not the same as taxes. Parents paying is volunteer. And many students do not have parents paying. " Would you say the same for when parents transfer the GI Bill's effects to their children, as that still is the government paying for it?" With the GI bill they served the country. They did work for the government to have the government pay for it. Many parents pay for their kids college so they can live a better life. There are pros and cons to both. But I will never mandate anything. The overall point is that by making college tuition free you are removing many experiences and life lessons that people can gain with college. Parents can cut off kids at any time. With the idea of tuition free college the government can't.

Thongmaster, who are these people standing in bread lines?
1
Bill Anderson, 80% of voters voted against single payer healthcare. People don't want it and they don't want socialism. That is why Bernie lost. As far as him fighting for the people. Running around pushing to take other people's money is not fighting for anyone.
1
Kurt.Dk-55, other countries face many problems in healthcare as well. When you run through the numbers in various ways you cannot say that other countries have a better system. They don't have a worse system, but they are also not better. Here is a good book for you to read https://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/-the-business-of-health_110115929760.pdf As a whole you are dealing with various cultures and economies. There are too many variables to do a direct side by side comparison of healthcare systems. For example, Denmark has mandatory military. That will change a culture.

Artic Camel, the top 10% earned 40% of the income. The rest of the 60% is in the bottom 90%. So there is a lot of money in the middle class.
1
Arctic Camel, seems like you are dodging the issue. I understand the progressive tax code. There are many arguments against it. Do you know what the federal income tax was until 1913? 0%.
1
Bill Anderson, what policies? And no, people do not like "populist ideas". 80% of voters in Colorado voted against universal healthcare.
1
"The military budget increase this year would have funded free college. " Not true without many restrictions. You are increasing demand without increasing supply. The college loan program did the same thing and colleges raised tuition.
1
Lance, everyone has access to K-12 education. After that if you can't read and learn on your own to some point than you are not going to survive college (or shouldn't).

"Yeah meanwhile how many cuts to public education does the government (republicans) do...how many schools in the inner cities get qualified teaches and supplies?" Education spending has been going up for decades. Inner city schools have received the most money as the department of ed mainly spends their revenue on Title I schools. On qualified teachers, blame the teacher unions for that. I feel it is a problem of there not being any qualified teachers in Title I schools. That is because teachers unions push to pay teachers more on seniority as opposed to need. Why stay with a inner city school when you can work at a school in a rich neighborhood and get paid the same? Now which party supports the teachers unions? "lol nice to gloss over a major problem there buddy, then again when have libertarians ever been credible. " I work part time in the school district so I understand how education works. And I have study education in the past when I thought about being a teacher. I understand the problem . "They're's a reason the world over considers american education and public education systems a laughing joke." That is not true at all.

Natural Selection, everyone can't go to college in Germany. They track their students.

Than colleges will just lower quality.
1
"Free college is predicted to be around $65 billion annually." Based on what? Also, is the quality going to stay the same. We lack professors, dorms, office space, tutors, TAs, classrooms, etc. You are going to increase demand without increasing supply. Prices will go up just like how the college loan program led to the increase in tuition.
