Uh, they understand how investment works. The issue is that the government is very poor at investing a lot of time.

rusty, no, but according to ultra leftists it does. That is the issue. Ultra leftists hear "austerity" (which is not happening) and freak out thinking it will lead to little economic growth when the economy is much more complex than that.

Mark Blythe is not an economist.

This ad is stupid. A major issue was that teachers' salaries were going up when inflation wasn't. Also, spending does not always lead to economic growth, productivity does.

Hobo, care to provide a source for your claim? From what I have read most of what you said is not true.

Dave Ponsford, this idea of electing the right people has been argued for years. What makes you think we will do it now? The reality is that government is poor at investment. The reasons why is that government official can just buy votes. The money is not really their's, they take it by force. And they don't have to worry too much about long term because even if they lose they most likely have a job lined up afterwards due to special interest. It is really hard to hold government accountable. That is why investments are bad.

Roads are locally ran and funded and are a drop in the bucket in terms of cost. Also, you have to think about what is the best investment overall. Spending a lot of money to build a road that falls apart quickly means more money for construction workers and the workers at the department of transportation, but it means less money for others due to higher taxes and needing to drive around construction. Building a road that requires less repairs means less money for construction workers but also means more money for others as they are taxed less and can move around easier. Being able to move around easier means more consumption and thus the economy grows overall. The construction worker can work on another project which grows wealth. People against austerity seem to just want to spend money without thinking about investment.

Austerity isn't happening though. That is the issue.

Lisa, austerity isn't happening. Watch the eEconomics video entitled "Austerity" by David Angelo.

Lisa, looking at one area, that has always had a problem with homelessness, is not a strong argument.
1
Lisa, and CA has been increasing spending on the homeless problem. San Fran gives needles away to homeless people in an effort to reduce HIV transmission.
1
Lisa, it is becoming expensive to live in CA because of the higher taxes and regulations. The leftists government destroyed that place.

14jackon, many argue that universal healthcare and "free" education are not the best route to take for many reasons.
1
14jackon, the US has, arguably, the best healthcare in the world in terms of quality.
