+guadalupe perez You are right that they do prefer local students, but to say race is not involved is simply not true. It is. Universities try to get a certain percentage of certain races at times. One example is graduate school when I was applying. I was told as a white guy I have an advantage because they had a cut off of foreigners for graduate school. As my old adviser said, we are dumb in the US. So it goes several ways but race is involved.

+Brandon Jackson So someone who lacks remedial skills should be allowed into a university just because they are black? That is setting them up for failure. I am not saying they should not go to college, we have smaller colleges for that. I am saying that setting up someone for failure is not smart.

+guadalupe perez "No school would risk admitting underperforming students." You never worked at a university then. They do accept students based on race to maintain diversity. They will lower standards to do it and give out scholarships with lower standards for black people.

+jetsfan jetsfa It is racist, but supporters of AA don't see it as that.

+Arlenis B Because if you look at statistics most lower achieving students in this country are black. The reason why is another topic all together but the stats don't lie. With Affirmative Action people are allowing black people in a college the size of the University of Texas, Austin with lower standards just to build diversity and because they are black. They are accepting students lacking remedial skills and putting them in classes the size of 200+ students, with professors that are not good at teaching, in a faster pace environment. They are being set up to fail. This isn't saying that all black people are inferior, and Scalia is surely saying the same thing. But statistically most of them will surely fail if placed in a school of that size. A smaller school would behoove them more. Nothing wrong with that. I went to a smaller school and now I am a PhD student. But overall the issue is accepting someone just because they are black even if they have an inferior background.

+Elijha 717 Who cares if I am black of not? Let me ask you this. Would you refuse to see a doctor for cancer is that doctor did not have cancer themselves?
2
+Arlenis B It is not a false equivalence. Just because I am not black doesn't mean I can't have a say on the issue. You do know that I worked in several low income schools and work at an university now. But even though I see low income families struggle, some of which are my friends, that I can't have a say on the issue because I am white.
2
+Arlenis B But a doctor does not know the pain and suffering of a cancer patient unless they had cancer themselves.
2
+Arlenis B My logic isn't flawed. Just because I haven't suffered doesn't mean I do not understand the issue. In reality I could have a deeper understanding of it because I can approach it without the influence of emotions. On racism there seems to be a lot of emotions involved that over dramatize the problem if one even exist at all.
2
+klakiti We kind of drifted off here. If you want to pick a winner you can. What I am seeing here is that she is over emotional on the issue. What she said is correct in racism being illogical. What I was aiming at, though, is that due to emotion people tend to cry racism when there isn't any. They do that because they are over emotional themselves, and as emotions go up logic goes down. That is my stance on the issue. Racism exist, I agree. But these days it is more victim card playing than anything. With their most recent comment it is kind of clear that they won't be rational unless they step back and calm down.

So I brought up legit points and was willing to discuss solutions to a problem on a thread started by Arlenis B and guess what.......I get called a racist and then blocked. NIce to see people enjoy being myopic.
1
+Arlenis B One example doesn't make a conclusion. If you were educated you would know that.
1
+Arlenis B The reason why is a different topic. If you want to get into a discussion about inferior schooling and why low income schools, which are usually inner city and mostly black, we can. The topic here is about admission into college and how students are admitted simply for being black no matter their background. But if you want to change the topic to improving K-12 schooling I am all ears. That is actually what I am building up to doing for a living.
1
+Arlenis B No, I take a step back and look at the entire situation before I make a judgement. Racism is overblown by emotions. People who say there is racism are being over emotional and are not looking at the entire picture or issue. I agree racism is illogical, but so is playing the race card.
1
+Arlenis B I will, and I won't feel any different.
1
+Brimar7 So anecdotal evidence is superior to actual numbers and facts? So you won't see a doctor to cure cancer unless they had cancer? Because, you know, you need experience according to you. Racism is a victim card. I find it funny that people claim that there is so much racism but yet the current president is black. And separate but equal does not exist anymore.

+necroryda You really don't know what a troll is, do you.
1
+yougosquishnow I never said racism doesn't exist. If you read my earlier comments you will see that I did say racism exist. But I said it exist with the ignorant and those who are not that important in society. But for people that actually matter, as in those on top that you can look at in getting you a job, or a high education, it does not exist. That is why you do see successful black people because guess what, those with intelligence don't see skin color, they see ability. You really need to look deeper in the issue. And yelling "troll" shows you don't know what a troll is.
1
+yougosquishnow " As a successful and highly educated Black woman," Right there. That is evidence in what I have been saying. If racism was so bad then how did you become successful? Why didn't professors simply just ignore you? The simple fact is because those who matter, those with intelligence are not racist. People who are successful see skills, not skin color. After Michael Brown got killed in Ferguson, MO you saw riots on the streets. You saw vandalism. You heard excuses in calling the police force racist (even though there were 2 black people and the cop only shot one). Instead of pushing a message that the black community should work on eliminating the stereotype of them being thugs in certain neighborhoods, they made excuses.

+Ylze Tyr Where in this entire thread have I gave any indication that I am a racist.
1
+klakiti I agree that poverty plays a role in crime. But which race has the highest percentage of those in poverty? Blacks. " After black people were freed" That was 150 years ago, how long are you going to let this excuse ride? I agree that this is not a simple answer, my main issues is that when you have a poor white person then it is their fault. But you have a poor black person who commits a crime people say that they were at a disadvantage because they were black. Or that we should not be so hard on them because they were black. Or society is racist. There are excuses made simply because of their skin color.

+Terrence Summerour Black people were free over 150 years ago.
