Nefariousness, what you wrote was very informative. As I mentioned before in an earlier comment to me this law was nothing more than democrats creating more government. When Trump talked about removing two regulations for every new one, and when businesses talk about costly regulations, this is exactly what they mean. I asked in another comment thread if there was an actual problem before the law was created? Because I did not see one. But to me this is nothing more than liberals creating more government which causes more problems.

It allows companies to advertise specific goods and services to people. For example, if I were to look up a book on quantum mechanics and buy it I would have other books on the subject being advertised to me. On TV stations with kids shows advertise toys and sugary cereals for a reason, they are targeting an audience. No different here except it is more specialized. I have not problem with this.

FishBayVI420H2O, we have laws to protect against people taking our CC and SS numbers. So no, your information, at least important information, won't get sold to criminals. The reality is that the ruling by Obama is nothing more than government overreach by the democrats to try to control internet just like they want to control everything else. Before these laws existed did anything bad happen? No. So what is the point of the law then?

To me the democrats just want to control the internet like they want to control everything else.

no Nah, when I buy a shirt with a logo on it I paid money for that shirt and that shirt gets advertisement. I receive no compensation for it and that company earns a profit. I see no difference at that point compared to what you described.

arsa rawr, what you said is correct. We have privacy laws already before Obama to protect private information online such as CC numbers and SS numbers. When I read this all I see is that advertisers can now advertise to you in a specialized, and Democrats just want to control the internet like they want to control everything else.

This is being overblown. There are certain things websites can't use such as credit card numbers and SS numbers. But if I were to look up a movie online and someone tries to sell me a movie similar to it, big deal? It is a more specialized way in advertising. Similar to TV stations that play kids shows will have advertisements for toys and sugary cereals. If you don't like this than use TOR. Also, the Obama rule opens the doorway for more government regulation which could slow down internet services and create monopolies. Some of the major websites such as Facebook and Youtube are left leaning for a reason and would support that.
