sluggdiddy And politics in science is a problem. We need to get politics out of it.

arturo92376 Climate change is a great example.

arturo92376 I agree, science is science. It becomes a problem when politicians try to create policies and spend tax dollars on it.
2
arturo92376 It should be done at the state level. I have seen waste done by federal funding.

Great. Get the federal government out of science. They are misrepresenting science, especially when it comes to climate change.

arturo92376 I am going to avoid details as I don't like my personal info being out. In my state the representative twisted a lot of arms in DC to get funding for this research facility connected to the university. A bunch of money was dumped into that and very little was produced. But due to this politician's political connections it kept getting funding until he got close to retirement. So much money wasted due to little be produced. I have seen it first hand. No one called him out because he was powerful in politics.

arturo92376 At the state level people can see if they are getting their money's worth alleviating corruption. Yes, research should funded, but it should not be wasted.
1
arturo92376 What? Several states do research in numerous areas. AZ and NM have some of the best research in astrophysics. Are they "flipping the bill" in that regard? The coastal states have some of the best research in marine biology, are they flipping the bill?
1
arturo92376 Why does it matter? If we lower federal taxes and allow the states to fund things it will be managed better. The federal government does waste a lot.
1
arturo92376 You are making it sound like the federal government has all the resources. It doesn't. It doesn't have anything unless it takes in a form of a tax.
1
arturo92376 At the state and local level there are fewer layers of bureaucracy and waste. No government has something until it takes in the form of a tax. Lower federal taxes will mean the states can have more revenue through taxes and thus can fund research. As is federal taxes are too high limiting resources for the states. I am not complaining about funding for research. I am complaining about how it is funded.
1
arturo92376 Also, tax breaks do not necessarily mean less revenue.
1
arturo92376 What do you mean "lowest taxed states"? Also, a lot of that is farm subsidizes. That issue has been debunked long ago. TX has low taxes and their revenue is high. CA has high taxes and has bankrupt cities. Why not lower federal taxes and allow the states to run things. By the way you are talking you will benefit.
1
arturo92376 We do not have a direct democracy in the US. At the state and local level we do. But that is up to them. Every state is different and how they conduct themselves is up to them. What is successful or not is subjective. I can point to Connecticut for failures of high taxation.
1
arturo92376 KS was above average in GDP growth compared to other states. They don't have a problem.
1
arturo92376 They don't have one. Even if they did that is up to the citizens of KS to deal with. Why do you care?
1
arturo92376 Really? KS GDP growth was above average in the US. Also, if it is a disaster who cares? It works elsewhere. It is more complicated than that.
1
arturo92376 Because there were a lot of states that were worse than KS. One place? TX, OR, SD, ND. That is to name a few. It is more than just taxes. If high taxes lead to prosperity then why not a 100% tax rate?
1
arturo92376 As in who cares, do you live in KS? Do you pay taxes in KS? Do you vote there? If the answer to those questions are no, then why should you care?
1
arturo92376 Because you are making a hand wavy argument about taxes. There is more to the economy than just taxes. But according to you we need high taxes. Well, how high? That is the issue. There are successful states with low taxes and some with high taxes. My point of how cares is the people of KS are fine. If not they will vote out the current government. You are wanting to subject what you think is the best form of government on them. How would you feel if they did it to you? That is the beauty of state rights.
1
arturo92376 I read it. You don't seem to get what I am saying. The issue is far more complicated than just taxes. If the citizens are fine then who cares?
