" Unions actually help NON union workers by raising the standards of salaries" Not really. They have killed many jobs.

Uh, not true. With technology and in a free market people can pick where they work pretty easily. If a place has poor working conditions than no one will work for the. A factory nearby my home town is dangerous to work in due to the high level of lead involved. Now the business offers many safety equipment and requires that anyone working there showers for one hour before they go home (and they get paid for it). They pay well, close to $30/hr with amazing benefits. People still are willing to work at another factory for $15/hr simply because it is much safer. Believe it or not businesses don't want their workers dying.

"Public and private sector unions shouldn't be regarded as the same." I agree. Public unions, to me, is legalize money laundering.

You can very easily say that education is being automated. Look at online assignments such as WebAssigns and Master Chemistry.

mikezeitgeist2, from my understanding this bill applies to public unions which shouldn't exist to begin with.
1
Private unions can exist and they can enforce government regulations if needed. But public unions should not exist.
1
No, state and local governments create regulations and unions hire representation to see if businesses are following them.
1
They can do that as well. This bill, by what I understand, is limiting public unions which should not exist to begin with. But if a private union wants to negotiate those things than fine, that is no different than if a private individual were to do that. But based on this bill this is against public unions which is basically legalize money laundry.

Right to work states also have lower unemployment. Saying they earn less is being very deceptive.

We can strip all child labor laws right now and nothing will change.

Throw Away, unions have led to fewer job opportunities for low skilled workers. They are not that great, especially public unions which should be illegal to begin with. Anyway, Kyle is extremely bias in what he says.
1
Throw Away, I said public unions. Way to leave out important details from my comment.

AlphaMikeOmega, union jobs prevent low skilled workers such as temp workers from working at a place. At the factory my dad worked at the union does not allow any temp workers which means less job opportunities for those entering the workforce or for those looking for a seasonal job.

" Unions are the working class' ONLY leverage against their employers" Not the only. In a free market competition plays a big role. Henry Ford offered his employees weekends off and higher pay because of competition and to reduce turnover rate. "unless there are very strict government regulations in place" Such as what? Unions should not involve the government at all. Workers should have the ability to unionize and people should have the ability to refuse to join a union. But a problem we have with government and unions are public unions. Private unions are not that big of a problem. There are issues attached with them such has killing jobs for example, but public unions is legalize money laundry since they are paid with tax dollars. " There's a reason walmart would rather shut down a store than have it unionized" Walmart is a low skill, low paying job that is not dangerous to work at. Some of the first unions were for coal miners. Now which job is more dangerous? "Walmart wouldnt be able to make tens of billions anymore!" Walmart actually has very thin profit margins.

"Your example assumes a level playing field for workers and employers and that all workers have the opportunity to leave if greener pastures exist. " For the most part they do. The problem is that union jobs typically kill jobs for low end workers preventing them from moving up. "He implied it would be unlikely," But that is not the case though. I a free market a work place will create a good working environment for the workers. If they don't than people won't work for them. "which isn't very hard to prove as the decline of unions in America precedes the decline of the working class here and their jobs being shipped overseas" There are many other variables involved in that.
1
" then they're wrong anyway, because the studies have shown that it will be an economic boost. " Raising the min. wage has never led to an economic boost. "public sector needs unions" No, they are government jobs paid by tax dollars. That is legalize money laundering. "In fact, Republicans largely want to abolish unions" Not private ones. They want people to have the options of joining a union, but they don't want to abolish private unions.

"There has never been any evidence put forward that unions kill jobs" Yes there has. The reason why they kill jobs is because they prevent individuals with little experience from entering the work force, such as temporary workers. "there is quite a bit of evidence that without unions workers rights get trampled and jobs leave the country" Overreaching unions are one reason why jobs leave. But, what workers rights get trampled? Please list me some "rights" workers have and cite the constitution. "It is similar to the argument that the minimum wage kills jobs" It does. " but the reality is states right next to each other where one has a high minimum wage tends to have more jobs" There are several variables for that as min. wage jobs make up a minute portion of the job sector. You are comparing overall employment to min. wage jobs. But, if you want to make that argument than you have to realize that right to work states also have lower unemployment. "more people out in the street buying things" That idea is why so many people are poor. They have bad money management skills. If they earn more money they should be saving it, not immediately spending it. "Walmart is the only employer in some towns" Usually because of job killing policies like the min. wage. Also, Walmart's working conditions are not bad at all. Some of the first unionized jobs were coal miners. Which job is more dangerous, coal mining or working at Walmart? "The irony is that libertarians and basic conservatives will be the first to say "life isn't fair" and "feels not reals" yet somehow the "free market" always finds a way to be fair " They don't say the free market will make things "fair". They know the reality of the issue.

"teachers are grossly underpaid" Not really. They sign a 180 day contract. They have every weekend off, holiday off, have sick days, and typically get raises every year. And with unions it makes it hard to fire them. "people now, work MORE and are more productive " Actually technology improved increasing productivity. People are not really working harder. Also, with increased productivity goods and services are better and cheaper.
1
Abyssal, what you said about Chris Christie and teacher benefits is wrong. Christie suggested freezing increases in teachers' benefits because we were in a recession. So while private workers were seeing a reduction in payment teachers were seeing an increase. There are a couple great videos, one where he addresses a teacher union leader, about the issue.

"I'm sorry that education is so fucking low on your priority list, " I am actually and educator myself. I teach on campus and I also work for the school district. I have many friends who are teachers themselves. So education is high on my list.
