Ryan Swanson Slaves were forced to work, min. wage laws force unemployment.

Danelle Lewis Right to work states also are more agriculture states and have lower cost of living. So their "low wages" go farther. If you have a lot of money but prices are high then that does not matter.
1
So basically what Kyle just said is that government should run all businesses and we should not have a private market. Damn he is a fool.
1
Considering how we should never even have a min. wage I agree with this part way. There isn't one single good argument in to even have a min. wage. I have heard all the arguments and after debunking them the person I debate end up using emotional arguments that mean nothing. In all there isn't one single good reason to even have a min. wage. Raising the min. wage harms the people where people end up getting paid less when it is raised.

+armlovesmetal If you were to go business by business, take all the money the CEO makes and instead spread it to the workers you will see that the workers will earn less than a dollar more an hour. For example, at Walmart it would be around 60 cents more an hour. In short, the money isn't there.
1
+armlovesmetal And that is your company. Just because you can afford to pay a higher wage doesn't mean every company can. Google pays their employees very well, did you pay your employees at that level? I bet not. Why not you greedy individuals? Let me ask this, how many employees did you hire? Why didn't you hire more? Why didn't you build more plants to hire more people? You are bragging about how high you pay people but I can easily criticize about how few of people you hired. Almost every business, and I man basically very close to all understand that if you pay employees well they will work hard, but there is also a point where the employee can only produce so much and thus you will be paying so much. In all just because you can afford to pay workers more doesn't mean every business can. You work at a furniture manufacturing plant. Furniture cost how much? And building furniture is more of a skill than flipping burgers or stocking shelves in retail.

Ulysses the courier $10/hr will destroy a lot of small towns, is that what you want?
1
Ulysses the courier If we are going to have one then yes, but really we should get rid of it.
1
+BernieSandersenEspañol Capitalism functioned just fine. The min. wage had create some of the problems we have now.
1
+BernieSandersenEspañol I know a lot about labor history.
1
+Ulysses the courier Nobody will work for that little, and if that is where the market stabilized itself then prices will be low as well. If grocery store workers were working for $1/hr then milk will cost around $0.50. So in all it wouldn't be bad.
1
+Ulysses the courier I do know how rich people work, they work a lot harder than most. It seems like you are full of jealousy in in that someone is rich but it isn't their fault that they decided to work hard and better themselves and you didn't. "Every heard of the gilded age. The rich were stealing money from workers and there was nothing they could do about it. The rich in those times had political control and the workers had bad working conditions, high taxes, and were getting low pay." That sounds like a lot of what is happening now. When you give politicians power they can be bought. It is that simple. " Ever heard of the rich gets richer the poor gets poorer. " Yeah, it is a myth. " People who go up to they're boss and say "your not giving me enough money" get their ass fired" With that approach yeah, but with the approach of getting a job elsewhere that is willing to pay more than no. It is a complete myth that businesses pay less. Less than 5% earn the min. wage. Around 50% of workers who earn the min. wage get a raise. The average hourly earnings in the US is over $24/hr. You are presenting this fear that businesses will pay little when there is zero evidence of it.
1
+badpanda84 That is not true. You are complaining about CEO cost but in reality CEOs, in relations to their entire working staff, don't earn much. If you take the top 6 CEOs of Walmart and taking their $77 million a year salary and spread it to the 525,000 workers of Walmart who earn less than $25,000 a year, they will get an extra $148 a year. That is it. They thought that corporations will give CEOs more money is not true.

Red Meth Chick Fil A decided on their own to raise their wages. Also not every business is ran the same as Chick Fil A

Tommy Latham Bernie will destroy this country. Businesses simply can't afford a $15/hr min. wage, especially in small towns in the midwest. If a $15/hr min. wage gets passed at the federal level midwestern states will suffer a lot.
1
Tommy Latham " if a business can't pay its employees a living wage and still make a profit, that business will fail, and rightly so." If a person isn't able to make a living then they will fail, and rightfully so......see how it is to turn things around. Walmart simply can't afford to pay higher wages, the money simply is not there.

Ylze Tyr Obama did in a lot of ways. Healthcare is now worse, we still haven't recovered from this recent recession. Why is Donald Trump leading? Because people are a little sick of politicians like Obama. I like how you call me a pro-establishment whore but seem to support Bernie. Bernie has been in politics since when? He is a career politician, he is the definition of establishment.
1
+Ylze Tyr Sanders has been a career politician. He has done nothing else in life. He is the definition of establishments. Might as well elect Clinton, she is the same thing, a career politician.
1
+David Yeakle Wealth does not equal income. They do not have enough money. The term "living wage" is a subjective term and thus means nothing.
1
+Ylze Tyr Answering you questions one by one 1. Bernie admits that he supports a failed system, that is why it matters. 2. Bernie is over 70 years old. I find is suspicious that he is now running for president even though he has been a politician for as long as he has. If he really cared about the people he would have ran earlier. This is nothing more than him making noise before he retires. Win or lose this is the last run for him. If he wins his political career will last 4 more years, if he loses he goes out making noise. 3. Pure economics. In the end wages will adjust. If you raise the min. wage prices will go up and hours will be cut. That has happen. You just end up hurting the poor with the min. wage increases. Price control does not work, even Paul Krugman in his own textbook says that. 4. Pure economics. You are not entitled to anything. To say you are entitled to a "living wage" means that no matter how productive you are you are guaranteed a certain set of money. If you are not productive then someone else has to work that much harder to pick up the slack. At that point you might as well say we are entitled to a home, but basic economics says otherwise.
1
+Ylze Tyr Bernie was an elected politician for over 30 years and is now running, Reagan was for 14 years, that is the difference. Bernie is a career politician, this is just a retirement party for him.
1
+Ylze Tyr The term "living wage" is not an economic term. Remember, even Paul Krugman in his textbook talks about the flaws of price control such as price floors (like the min. wage). That is basic economics, not the term "living wage".
1
+Ylze Tyr No, I am questioning his motives. If he really cared about the people then why is he running for president now? The honest answer is that as a career politician he is doing this as a retirement party. Is he old? Yes, but that isn't the main issue. The main issue is that for a man of a lot of talk he has a history of no action until now.
1
+Ylze Tyr Still doesn't make "living wage" a basic economic term.
1
+Ylze Tyr Point to an economics text book that explains the term "living wage".
1
+Ylze Tyr Bernie around 10 to 20 years ago was on a national news station talking about the same problems he is now. He could have ran but didn't. He simply wanted to life off of the federal dime and now wants to have his retirement party.
1
+Ylze Tyr A dictionary definition doesn't mean anything, I want a textbook definition. You do know what a textbook is?
1
+Ylze Tyr It isn't speculation, he is done as a politician. This is his retirement party.
1
+Edgehead10075 You are arguing with a guy who has little knowledge when it comes to economics. He is a classic liberal in that he uses little facts and just uses emotions. He can't even get basic facts correct. He feels that all business owners are earning millions and they can all pay higher wages when basic math says otherwise. I have dealt with this fool before and put him in his place. You can if you like. Just be aware when you do you will get a lot of huffing and puffing from him and a lot of talking points with no facts to back them up.
1
+Ylze Tyr "any job somebody needs done and doesn't want to or can't do themselves deserves a living wage. and you still have yet to prove otherwise." Not all jobs that currently exist need to be done. If you make the McDonald's employee too expensive for example then the owner can cut staff and go with less or automate. The reason why those workers are paid low is because they the demand for their labor is low. So in other words their job is something people don't need done and thus they are paid low.
1
+Ylze Tyr You said the term "living wage" is a basic economic term but use a dictionary, not a textbook to define it. When I define basic physics terms I look in my many textbooks.
1
+Ylze Tyr One way individual pay is determined is based on demand. I just ate at Popeye's. I spent around $8 on a meal. I was willing to spend $8 on that meal. The workers there most likely earned a low wage. Now if they were to work full time and make $15/hr then my meal will cost more. At that point I would just cook at home. It is simple supply and demand. When demand is low the the price is low. If price exceeds demand than people don't purchase it. That is basic economics as well. If the price becomes too high than the business owner will fire the worker and unemployment is higher.
1
+Ylze Tyr If all it took was a 30 cent raise to raise wages to $15/hr then why don't companies raise prices right now and make that much more in profits? I mean, they are greedy business owners, aren't they?
1
+Ylze Tyr I asked you because now your argument fell apart. You said that all it would take was a 30 cent raise meaning no loss in demand in all will happen. So I asked a very simple question, why don't businesses simply raise prices and collect that much more in profit? I will ask those from Purdue the exact same thing. So answer the question. I know the answer, I want to see if you do.
1
+Ylze Tyr It is a legit question. If these business owners are so greedy then why are they not raising prices and just getting more in profits? You are refusing to answer the question because like how you refuse to get in detail of what a living wage is you realize that your argument fell apart.
1
+Ylze Tyr Yes it does cause your argument to fall apart because it shows that a company just can't raise price 30 cents or they will. If all it took was a 30 cent raise to make up the difference then why raise prices already and earn that much more in profits? The answer is that it isn't that simple. The same goes for the "living wage" argument. You can't just arbitrarily give a number and call it a living wage. Say you have a guy who is diabetic, lives in the ghetto of downtown LA and has to drive an hour to work. Their "living wage" is high. It is all subjective. You have never given me anything on it, you just say people should get a "living wage" with zero justification.
1
+Tommy Latham There comes a point where you simply can't afford higher wages. People are paid what they are in the market because the are worth that much. A company may expand but depending on what they produce they will not be able to earn enough to pay more. A restaurant will not be able to earn enough to pay more because people are not willing spend more on their food. Most companies work on thin profit margins already. They simply can't afford higher wages. It isn't the company's responsibility to make sure you earn a living. If you are not earning enough than find a way to earn more or cut expenses. Get roommates, don't go out so much. This is why the "living wage" is subjective, it depends on several variables. You ask if I ever ran a business. I doubt you have because what you described is not that simple. If you really knew you would understand that most businesses run on thin profit margins. But yet you call them greedy and not the workers.
1
+Tommy Latham If you can't create enough wealth than you shouldn't get paid more. See how easy it was to turn your first statement around. Most business owners are modest and don't own mansions and drive a Porsche. Anyway, what do you accomplish by bringing people down? I don't mind having someone rich drive a Porsche, that means my car is pretty good as well. If we didn't have a situation like that than I wouldn't have a car and a rich person will be driving the car I do now. You bring those on top down you bring everyone down.
1
+Dyvim Tvar Actually my schedule is very flexible, I am on salary so as long as I get my work done I can take off when I want. So I do get paid vacation.
1
+Ylze Tyr What several things? You have to be specific. Until then you are just spewing rhetoric.
1
+Ylze Tyr It is a legit question. If all businesses had to do was raise prices 30 cents then why not just do it anyway and collect that much more in profits?
1
+Ylze Tyr That MIT link doesn't get into specifics either. It is no wonder it never made it into a publication but instead an open source.
1
+Ylze Tyr Ok, why not 4.3%? Why not raise prices that much and make that much more in profits? It is a serious question and all you have done is dance around it. It seems to me that you can't answer it showing you know nothing on the topic as usual.
1
+Ylze Tyr One strategy I found that works great when debating liberals is to ask questions. I can give facts and info all I want. But when I ask questions that dig into specifics it is easy to expose that liberals have no clear answer. Like I am doing now. I asked you two basic questions, you can't even answer them.
1
+Ylze Tyr It doesn't. On the first page it says nothing. On their calculations what is "transportation"? What is "other"? What kind of food? What kind of housing? With childcare, not everyone needs it. It does not get into detail. My transportation is very low considering how I walk to work. My housing is lowering then what is listed in my city. It does not get into detail thus it falls apart.
1
Ryan Swanson If you raise the min. wage then businesses have no choice but to hire less people at less hours. You have now create a law that forced unemployment. Businesses don't pay more because they simply can't afford to. The min. wage is at an all time high, and that is the case every time you raise it.
1
+Ryan Swanson You can't tie the min. wage to inflation. Not everything inflates for both goods and services. Let me ask you, how much did you pay for your cell phone and computer? Now compare it to the price of the cell phone and computer to when they first came out. The price of those goods dropped along with several others. But according to you everything inflates. If that is the case then why didn't you spend at least $4000 on your cell phone? There is not enough money, the math proves it.
1
+Ryan Swanson The cost of living doesn't always go up. Look at cars, cheaper than compared to the past. Same is with electricity, cell phones, computers and so on. Why is rent going up? Well one, property taxes. Another, high demand of living there. Rent has been the same in my home town for years. People don't want to live there. How many people owned a TV in the 60s? You own a flat screen TV now, that says something. You can afford a luxury item that is far better than in the past. Air conditioning is not a necessity, neither is gas. The reason why prices go up at all is mainly due to government action.
1
+armlovesmetal I lived without AC for 4 years. I know several people who don't have gas.
1
+armlovesmetal People survived for years without AC.
1
+goddessmelanisia They still die for several reasons. People die. It is still not an excuse to give away things.
1
+armlovesmetal I live in desert. It has been in the 90s all summer. The dry air helps. AC is mainly needed for humidity and keeping things dry. With it cool at night I cool the apartment down and close it up during the day.
1
+goddessmelanisia A living wage is a subjective term that doesn't mean anything. When broken down you find that the term "living wage" is a meaningless term. The min. wage it at an all time high. You can't use inflation because if you do then you are saying that everything inflates. If that is the case then why didn't I pay over $4000 for my cell phone? The min. wage is a reason why the cost of living has gone up. The min. wage is at an all time high.
