A lot of those statues represent a history of where states fought for state rights. After the Civil War the south was devastated where they were basically ridiculed by the north. Thus the statues were put up remember how they fought. Someone like Robert E. Lee had criticisms of slavery but fought the war because of state rights. The Civil War was not all about slavery but also about state rights. Like everything, it is complex.

Yep, do not let a good crisis go to waste. Because when you cannot win on principle you need a crisis.

That is the problem. People have essentially a religious like belief on this issue. I, and others, are all for police reform. But these protesters are not thinking critically. In 2019 there were 10 black individuals who were unarmed killed by police. Seven of them were justified as they were doing things like trying to run over the cops. One was an accident by a black police officer, and the other two have the cops being charged for murder. But with how these protesters are acting they make it sound like it is happening almost daily

I actually agree with that. But the issue is that many on the left want to defund the police. Those cameras are not free.

@gymnastoman1 state rights. Nowhere in the Constitution at the time gave the federal government power over the states to end slavery. The federal government was over reaching at that point. It becomes a slippery slope. If they can do it with slavery why not do it with other parts of society such as education, infrastructure, business practices, etc.? Also, after the Civil War a federal income tax was created that was supposed to be "temporary" as none existed. It was soon shot down. But overall it was federal government overreach in power.

@sporerocks64 slavery was involved, but so were state rights. It wasn't too long ago that after the war of 1812 a temporary federal income tax was proposed to pay for it. The people refused as it was an overreach of federal power. People still at the time pushed for limited federal government and state rights. Even after the Civil War a temporary federal income tax was proposed, passed and was later shot down in court. The idea of independence from a centralized government as individuals was still strong. Remember the US was not even 100 years old. Also, slavery was complex on its own. Many look at what the media shows with large plantations and slaves being whipped when many people owned one or two and they were not harmed. Many blacks fought with the south. Less than 50% of white families owned slaves.
