  1. Several federal laws are unconstitutional to begin with. Any federal law prohibiting marijuana is unconstitutional due to the 10th amendment.

  2. The constitution states clearly the role of the federal government and what it can and cannot do. The 10th amendment allowed for the states to govern themselves within the rules of the constitution as well. The constitution placed strict limits on the federal government and gave more freedom to the states. Now the federal government had power over the states in some ways, but in the end, when you break it down, it really has no power over the citizens with the exception of treason and buying property. Thus marijuana laws at the federal level are unconstitutional.

  4. Lord, if someone is getting paid $10/hr to make something, and then suddenly gets paid $15/hr to make the same thing than the price of whatever they make will go up. What increases purchasing power is development of technology and skills, both which creates wealth and drive prices down.

  7. Joshua McLean Pick any reason to have a min. wage and I can tell you why that is not so.  I have heard all of the reasons and when broken down they are not good ones. There is a youtube video of a debate about abolishing the min. wage.  Those in favor of it had data and evidence how it doesn't do any good.  Those who wanted the min. wage, in the end, had to resort to appeal to emotion rhetoric about the single mom with 2 kids to make their case.  That is all they have going for them in the end. So when broken down there is not one single good reason to even have a min. wage.

Jersey Dragon I earn way more than the min. wage.  If that is all you can earn than you have a problem.  As is less than 4% of workers make at or below the min. wage.  that means over 96% of workers make more than the min. wage even though business can legally pay less.  The average hourly earnings in the US is over $24/hr.

  9. Because people love handouts. Most businesses have paid sick leave as is. If you have a job that doesn't have it than you are either low skilled or work part time.

  11. Tony, the idea that it "was not enough" displays ignorance on the topic (not to be rude). As the OP said, people were priced out of their jobs. Now they are earning $0 with no opportunity to move up. Also, Walmart simple can't afford higher wages.

  14. I am a moderate and I love his show. I love it because it is a constant reminder that the competition out there for a job is not much. With my skills and knowledge I won't have any problem finding a high paying job with these idiots out there.

  17. DQABlack I worked a low wage job for years. I worked my way and didn't ask for any handouts.  You are.  You are literally saying that you need the government in order for you to get money.

DQABlack And I am the productive person out of my group, so what's your point?  If you are that skilled than get a new job.  You are paid a low wage because you don't generate much wealth.  Let me ask you, what is your job?  I do research for a university and thus generate wealth.  My feeling is that you don't and get paid little. When I worked for a small company as a short order cook I worked hours no one else wanted to.  I was still paid only $8/hr.  The reason why is because the min. wage went to $7.25/hr.  We had to pay a new dishwasher that much and thus my raises stopped despite me working there nearly 7 years and being efficient. Despite that I was still paid low because 1. the min. wage didn't allow for me to earn more 2. I simply did not generate that much wealth at the time That is the way it goes.  Get a better job.

DQABlack I guarantee you that if you were to run through the numbers you will see that you don't make that much for your company.  That is the harsh reality of it.  "I suppose that could be true...if you completely ignored inflation. The minimum wage would be $11 if kept up at the past's value - and it would be $22 if it matched actual worker production, worker production having gone much, much higher thanks to computers and other technology." You can't tie this to inflation because not everything inflates in the market.  The brick cell phone in the 80s would cost around $4000 in today's money.  Now how much are smart phones?  And what is better, a smart phone or a brick cell phone?  The same is with labor.  Not only are you saying that Blockbuster employees should still have a job, but they should be paid $11/hr.  How do you justify that?  By simply saying inflation. With productivity that has gone up due to technology.  Even at that those who invested in it or work in it has seen their wages go up.  It is called Skilled Biased Technological Change.  There are several jobs, like in the food industry, who haven't seen their productivity go up at all.  But if you were to look at unit labor cost since the 80s, that is cost of labor over productivity, that has gone up.  That means the price of labor is outpacing productivity. Even at that, you are comparing the lowest paid worker to average productivity.  That is a poor comparison.

DQABlack My point with the brick cell phone is that not everything inflates.  Same goes with labor.  There are jobs that no longer exist because they are worth $0.  That is how the market functions.  Some jobs increase in value, some decrease, some stay the same.  Same with goods and services.  You can't just arbitrarily determine how much a job is worth.  The min. wage is what it is, the minimum.  It isn't some magical number for someone to live off of.  Also, if the min. wage is too high, and someone doesn't have the skills to justify that high of a wage than they will not get hired, period. Technology have made it so goods and services are better and cheaper.  That has increased purchasing power as a whole.  A business who invest in technology can lower prices and make products better to attract customers. They won't necessarily get more profits.  If they do they can also invest in more to grow a business and hire more, not necessarily pay more.  "Also, I in fact do know (roughly) how much I make for my company," Doubt it.  Also, if you really worked for a large company they will have shareholders they have to keep happy.  If they cut profits to over pay you they will sell back their shares causing the business to downsize leading to you and your friends losing their job.  "They can afford to treat their employees better, but the profits are more important than their employees." Shareholders are more important.

Aeroldoth3 It is up to the worker to find a way to make a living.  Either get roommates, get help from friends or family, or get a better job.  The harsh reality is that if you can't produce much, or don't have anyone in life to help you, than what are you worth in life?  Not much.  If you disappear that is it.

We shouldn't have a min. wage, period.  All it does is remove the bottom rungs of the economic ladder.  It hurts poor people or those with limited connections.  A poor teenager from a low income school will have their life hindered to where they can't get a job at a young age.  They are at a disadvantage already.  The "standards" in this country have done more harm than good.  No one is forcing anyone to work, period. FDR turned a recession into a depression.  I wouldn't listen to anything he says.

  26. Aeroldoth3 Workers are still disposable. If the min. wage is too high there will be workers who simply won't get a job.  A business can cut staff and cut hours.

  27. DQABlack The second you say "reasonable" you just set the grounds for a vague amount.  You have no standard in what the min. wage should be and thus have to use the word "reasonable". When broken down there is not one single good reason to even have a min. wage, period.  Nothing positive comes from it.  You mentioned unemployment rate.  There are several factors involved in unemployment rate such as regulations and taxes.  You also have to consider that 1. the min. wage has been risen as small amounts compared to our large economy, Christina Romer admitted that a $9/hr min. wage is rather small 2. Most jobs pay above the min. wage to begin with, so any increase is frivolous. 3. you have what is called labor to labor substitution When you look at target groups, such as teenagers and those with low skills, you do see an increase in unemployment when the min. wage goes up.  They get lost in the statistical noise. In the end the min. wage has no positive effect.

  28. A "living wage" is nothing more than an appeal to emotion phrase to push for a bad idea. It is completely subjective and doesn't mean anything. My "living wage" is very low due to my health and frugal lifestyle. Someone with a health problem has a higher "living wage". There is no clear definition for it which is why economists don't use it.

  30. Corporations are more likely to cut staff and hours since they have more resources to do with less until the market stabilizes. Small business will have to raise prices and will most likely just go under.

  32. Most Americans have vacation time and paid sick leave. Those that don't either work part time or work in low skill/low paying jobs that have very flexible hours to begin with.
