  1. Peppridge Farm, the idea of college is you do more work outside of the classroom. I don't find the structure odd, what you should be doing is reading and studying for hours outside of class, especially in the STEM fields.

  2. To add to my comment, college is about self motivation and investment. You are investing your time and money to move up in the economic ladder. This is one strong reason why people oppose "tuition free" college. You spend time outside of the classroom studying, contacting professors and working with colleagues to do well. You develop connections that way and learn how to teach yourself. You put yourself in a position where you are able to work a job with flexible hours and more time off. If you move up enough you can set your own hours.

  3. Or have goods and services be better and cheaper. Compare cars not to cars from the 70s. How many DVD players were there in the 70s? How many smart phones? The list goes on.
