  1. fordhouse8b Really?  The best times recently were under Clinton with a republican congress and under Reagan with a democrat congress.  Look at now, we had a democrat president and a split congress, so Obama could hide behind his senate and our economy is still terrible. But to say that under a democrat administration that there has been strong economic growth is being shallow.

Slaves were treated as property and were forced to work.  They had not choice.  People can always quit if they don't like their job.

  6. Lavona Lewis When you create a min. wage you start removing options for individuals. That at a disadvantage are unable to obtain a job and better their situation, and those individuals in that case are typically the poor.

Lavona Lewis Yes, companies want cheap labor, but competition doesn't allow that.  Less than 5% earn at or below the min. wage.  2/3 of min. wage workers get a raise within a year.  The average hourly earnings in the US is over $24/hr.  Businesses already pay more than the min wage to attract better employees.  There comes a point where they simply can't afford to pay more. Now you may say businesses should cut profits, but less profits means less investment and thus less growth.  Walmart just open two new stores in my city within the last 5 years.  That is more jobs and more convenience for people.  If they were making less profits that would mean less stores and a harder life for a lot of people

Lavona Lewis To answer your  question, when you raise the min. wage you price those with low skills, little experience, and those who lack connections out of the job market.  If they are only worth $8/hr and the min. wage is raised to $10/hr, than they are not going to get a job.  That is why when the min. wage goes up so does teenage unemployment.  That particular group of people simply are not worth that wage.  And typically those type of people are from low income families.  That is why economist say raising the min. wage is removing the lower rungs of the economic ladder. There are other things people do as well.  Raising the min. wage may require businesses to pay more by hour, but not by week.  They do cut hours of workers or not hire them at all as I mentioned before.

  9. Lavona Lewis Yes, there will be less fry cooks, and gas clerks, and so on.  If the min. wage goes up to high than prices will have to go up in order to keep them on board. That decreases demand for those types of services and thus no jobs.  People will avoid shopping someplace if it becomes to expensive, they will seek alternatives.   Other effects will be a business shutting the doors and hour earlier.  Several fast food restaurants use to be 24 hours, now they open at 6, and in some cases later, and close as early as 9.  That is what happen in my hometown when the min. wage went up, 24 hour restaurants cease to exist.   Businesses will require an AA if the min. wage is too high.  They will avoid low skill workers. You advocating for gradually increasing the min. wage is you saying that the value of those workers have gone up, they haven't.  Their value has pretty much remain the same.  It is an unskilled job and if you raise the min. wage there will be less jobs for those at a disadvantage, typically the poor.

Lavona Lewis I am not ignoring profit/productivity trends.  Look at the source I gave you.  Unit labor cost is the price of labor over productivity.  In several areas unit labor cost has gone up, and typically where productivity increase has been low.  That means the price of labor is outpacing productivity.  The area that saw the greatest drop in unit labor cost saw the greatest increase in productivity.   The trend I am seeing is that unskilled labor, that hasn't seen much productivity growth, reap the benefits from areas in the private sector that has seen productivity growth.

Lavona Lewis I am ignoring him because honestly, and I don't say this much at all, he is a troll.  I don't mind having a discussion with people, but he name calls, cites very bias sources, and even when I give him citations to back up my claim he says I never do.  He is just trolling me.  I have better things to do then deal with someone that stupid.

Lavona Lewis You are looking at the wrong source.  I tried citing the source that shows unit labor cost since 1987 for different areas of the job market.  It shows how every area of the job market is not the same.  Some have increased in productivity a lot, while others haven't.  One issue I have is that people look at overall productivity when they should be breaking it down.  It goes back to the min. wage.  If you increase it you will see a rise in unemployment for those with low skills and teenagers, but overall unemployment might not be effected since the min. wage doesn't touch a vast majority of jobs. In the end we have to break it down.
