Many factors. One, happiness is subjective. Next, look at those countries. Finland, Norway, Sweden, and to a point Denmark are all cluster together. New Zealand and Iceland are isolated as islands. That leads to less diversity. In the US you have greater diversity and 320+ million people. That plays a role in if people are happy or not. For example, ask someone living near San Jose is they are happy with the high prices, and rush hour traffic on the 680 and they will probably say no. Where some southerner will say yes with their easy going life style. Looking up Norway's traffic they say that for the most part it is calm.

What do all these countries have in common? Well not for all, but most border each other such as Finland, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark, all in the top 10. Canada is in the top 10 and borders the US. Australia, Iceland and New Zealand are isolated for the most part. That does play a role.

Dara Marc Sasmaz, it is an argument. Denmark also borders Sweden who borders Norway and Finland. The Netherlands is not far away either. Those countries are grouped together. Now mix in with the fact that Iceland and New Zealand are island and isolated you see a trend here.

Norway also has around 5 million people and funds their programs with oil.

Happiness is subjective. It does not measure true success of a country. Someone can be happy with very little. Ever heard of the saying "ignorance is bliss?".

Still, in the end it is subjective. People making a big deal about this list are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Kyle asked what is common about those countries? Well many, including Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands (to a point) border each other. Iceland and New Zealand are isolated. That plays a role as well. As a whole I don't buy into the whole "happiness" index.
