The two worse taxes, in my opinion, are the property tax and the payroll tax. The property tax is the government deciding how much your property is worth and than taxing you. It is taxing income that you don't have.

@lazysylph3312 , I pay taxes to receive benefits from the government. A part of that is ownership of property and doing what I want with it. A property tax prevents poor people from owning land essentially.

One problem that happens in CA is the influx of hispanics. They are poor and you have cases where a family has 4 or 5 kids in a two bedroom house. So zoning has it that those schools are over crowded leading to large classroom sizes like that teacher with 40 students.

@JustSita5000 , defense spending has nothing to do with K-12 education funding. The states fund for K-12 education.

So refusing to do their job benefits the students how?

I love this as well. A lot of their problems in their school system is arguably because of undocumented immigrants overrunning the schools.

The problem is similar to what happens in the bay area. The cost of living is so high in those areas that they can't afford to pay teachers more. Who wants to commute hours a day or live with three other teachers in the same place?

@Jeff Beck , because you can only tax so high. Also, defense spending has nothing to do with local and state spending. The federal government can cut the defense budget to $0 and the teachers won't see an extra dime because the states and local governments dictate teacher pay.

True. Public unions are, in my opinion, legalize money laundering. They donate to politicians to get them elected to give them raises.

C W , maybe they should problem solve. You know, act like an educated person.

Kavita8 ,one can argue that. The state I live in has that problem. In the areas where the Hispanics live there are classrooms with 30+ kids and every classroom is used. There is a school in a richer part of the city and they have too many classrooms where they have entire classrooms with no one using them. You really can't zone that easily either because of the 4 to 5 kids living in a two bedroom apartment.

True. Having to pay for ESL teachers cost money. And having larger classes due to more students takes resources.

@JustSita5000 , 84% of K-12 funding is state and local. 8% is private. 8% is federal where most of the money goes to Title I schools for meal plans and equipment. It doesn't go to teachers. I am well educated on this topic.

@RipCityBassWorks , never said they didn't have that right. The point being is those large families create a huge burden on the schools. My state has a large Hispanic population. The schools next to apartments have Hispanic families with 3, 4 or 5 kids in a two bedroom apartment. You have classroom sizes of 30+ and every classroom is full. The music teacher has to use the lunch room as a classroom. Now compare that to another school in my city in a richer part of the city. They have empty classrooms. They have too many classrooms. Why? Because the school is next to homes of families with one kid or no kids. In zoning you can't split apartment complexes in half and you can't ask students to commute a long way so it becomes a problem.
