People have suggested that. However, in the US we have a different culture all together making ideas like that hard to implement.

Depends on where you live. Fire departments are ran locally. Besides, that is completely different than college. College is an investment you make as an adult.

@mikewest3108 , the value in a college degree is that it is an investment you make as an adult. It is you showing employers you are willing to invest time and money to accomplish a long term goal. You receiving an education is on you. You don't need the government and you really don't need college. You can teach a lot of things taught in college on your own and really that is what colleges also push you to do. But the value in the college degree is that it is an investment. Making it tuition free gets rid of that and thus lowers the value of a college degree.

@mikewest3108 , also, high school is ran locally, not federally. It is the local society deciding to allow our kids to have some education before they are an adult. But after K-12 you are an adult now.

@mikewest3108 , the doctor example is very poor. Doctors have to know their shit as they work in a high stressful situation where life and death are on the line. Grades don't matter in the big picture. Work experience and recommendations matter. That is especially true in graduate school. After graduate school they care more about your research and how well you can present it. Grades are irrelevant the higher up you go in college.

@mikewest3108 , how am I wrong? Saying I am wrong does not make it so. I am currently a PhD student. No one cares about my grades. I have first hand experience in this.

@mikewest3108 , graduate school admissions in many cases are not that competitive. And there are other factors as well such as GRE scores, research experience, recommendation letters. etc. I as accepted in every graduate program I applied for with just a 3.3 GPA. A reason why is because I have a peer reviewed paper as an undergrad. Also, grad school will look at subject GPA. For example, my major GPA was close to a 4.00, I had low grades in other courses. GPA is not that important if you have strong recommendations and work experience. Consider this, you have two applicants, one with a 4.00 but no work experience, or someone with a 2.90 and strong work experience. Who will you hire? I will hire the latter a they show they can keep a job and work, especially if their employer recommends them. The former most likely just studied and did no other activities making them too 1 dimensional.

@mikewest3108 , my PhD is in physical chemistry. I had a 3.3 undergrad GPA and currently, I believe, a 3.5 graduate GPA. Not concerned because it doesn't matter. When I apply for jobs they will ask me about my research and how well I can explain it. Grades are irrelevant in grad school. Ask any PhD candidate and they will tell you that.

@mikewest3108 , that would be too low. One of the managers of the stock room does though. He was able to get a job out of that. I know some with a 2.5. This manager I am pushing him to get an eMBA. He is worried about his GDP but I told him that by being a manager for almost a decade will override that.

Evan Zuppardo , considering how our university system if far better than Europe I will use your example. We have fare more opportunities. With a college degree you are showing employers you are willing to invest to better yourself in the long run. Colleges get a lot of funding. Walk on a university campus some day and then walk on a public school. University campuses are much better overall in appearance. This also extends to how colleges are so different compared to high school. Colleges are essentially another community with their own gym, living quarters, eating quarters, etc. Education is on you at that point as an adult. Being blunt, if you can't find a way to educate yourself at that point in life then you are a lost cause.

Evan Zuppardo , college taught me to be self independent and learn on my own. You know, read peer reviewed papers, things you don't have access to.

@mikewest3108 , grades are one of many factors one considers. Yes, if you have a GPA below 2 that sends out a huge red flag. But when you start getting into the 2.5 range, you do have to sell yourself more, but you can succeed. When you get in the 3 to 4 range, well, it doesn't matter. Someone with a 3.1 is not necessarily worse than someone with a 4.00.

Evan Zuppardo , uh, you literally proved to me that you don't have access to peer reviewed papers. Your excuse was for me to link you directly to the article which I did. That shows you don't understand the peer reviewed system. Actually we do have more opportunities. For example, we have JC and CC for people looking for a cheaper form of education. We are way ahead of Europe in terms of quality as many of the universities there are not focused on education but research (which is how university rankings are done), and they track their students preventing some from attending. In the US we allow anyone. Maybe it will be at a JC or a smaller college, but you still have a chance. Uh, you are investing both time and money. You are showing you can manage your life in terms of a budget, schedule, etc. to completely a long term goal. If you remove the money part of it what do employers have to go off of to see if you are worth hiring? Nothing really. Why is money involved? Because goods and services cost money. Every state has issues with education. Sounds like you are a high schooler. If so you are in for a rude awakening when you hit college.
