The people of Anaheim tried to do with with Measure L where any company who received tax benefits in that city had to pay $18/hr by 2022, mainly it was to attack Disney. What did Disney do? They asked for no more tax benefits, so the workers won't get a raise.

Reactionary Hermit, learn the difference between wealth and income. The Walton family is so wealthy because they are the largest shareholder of the company. Shares are not income until you liquidate them. If the Walton family were to just liquidate their shares to pay employees higher than the market rate than investors will see that as a poor way of using shares and stop buying causing the value of those shares, and the company, to drop. When that happens Walmart will have to downsize leading to less jobs.

Bernie needs to stop doing this. He is a fraud.

Companies are too smart. In Anaheim workers of Disney pushed for Measure L where any company in that city receiving tax benefits will have to pay $18/hr by 2022. It passed. Disney then requested to no longer receive tax benefits so they don't have to pay that wage. If Walmart does raise wages because of this pressure they will cut hours or cut benefits. These companies are not dumb, people who support laws pushed by Bernie are.

The bully pulpit won't work. In Anaheim the workers of Disney tried it with Measure L top which any company receiving tax benefits will have to raise their min. wage to $18/hr by 2022. What did Disney do? They asked the city to no longer receive tax benefits so they don't have to raise wages.

Wages are going up under Trump. Trump is improving the economy of a nation of 320+ million people. What has Bernie done? Just bitch about rich people. And stop saying "living wage", it means nothing as it is 100% subjective.
1
Un Homme, not really. Giving out raises to people who do not deserve it creates entitlement.

MrManBuzz, what makes you think they will invest in themselves? We offer them a K-12 education and they did not invest in themselves. So why would they change now? Fact is they are poor for a reason, mainly because they refuse to work.

@jojoboko6990 , companies will find a way around these things. That is the point.
1
@retiredguyadventures6211 , not really. The tax dollars go to Anaheim where you don't know where that money goes. It is not going to the employees which was the original intent.
1
@danielpincu6030 , this is why Kyle doesn't debate. What he says can easily be countered. He points to wealth where wealth does not equal income. He is basically asking Walmart to liquidate their shares to pay employees more which will lower the value of the company.

@KaiserMattTygore927 , wages are arguably not stagnate.
1
@胖卡比-j6k , that is most likely true. Retail has small profit margins. A lot of what they earn ends up going to shareholders. This is why Bernie has to point to the "wealth" that is owned by the Walton family as opposed to the income. They have so much wealth due to how many shares of Walmart they have. That is not income. Now they can liquidate those shares but if they did that to pay employees more than they are worth in the market than investors will see that as a poor investment and no longer buy shares of Walmart causing the company to lose shareholders and the value of their stocks drop. At that point the company will have to downsize leading to less employees. The fact is that Walmart does not pay a higher wage for one simple reason, they can't afford it. This is why Bernie has to be deceptive pulling what he does.
1
@KaiserMattTygore927 , it is very arguable that wages have not stagnated.
1
@spacedoohicky , learn the difference between wealth and income. They don't earn that much in income, they earn that much in wealth. Big difference.

SkyTech, it is.

jojo, these owners of these companies are not stupid. They prepare for these things. They understand there are politicians who will take advantage of the ignorance of the people to pass laws like these. These companies find a way to work around them. One could be that in a city with many Walmarts they can transfer employees from one Walmart with a low number of customers to another with more customers. That can allow them to cut hours and limit hiring. When you have multiple stores open you can move employees around like that. Or you can close down certain sections of a store. Such as one store could shut down their auto area and no longer offer oil changes where other Walmarts do forcing customers to drive farther. There are ways around it. A company the size of Walmart has resources to work around these. Also, a bill like this will not hold up in court as it is directly attacking a company with no due process.

These companies will just pass the cost onto the consumers and employees in some way. That is how it always works. This is why strong government overreach does not work.

GBomb Engineering, Bernie pushes to keep the ignorant man happen, or delusional, either one. There are many things that Bernie never tells the people, such as he wants to raise taxes on everyone or that he wants to make private insurance illegal. But many ignorant people follow him.
