Atheist are really no different than theist, you are picking a side when there is a possibility of being wrong.  They are not intellectually superior, they are no better or worse than theist, and they have just as many annoying people as theist.  I don't hate atheist, I hate individuals.  If an atheist goes around feeling they are superior, smarter than the average person, and overall better it doesn't make me hate atheism, it makes me hate that fool.  But in the end atheist are no different than theist.
