There are several things here. One, Australia is an island and thus is isolated from the world. Next, despite its size people mainly live in a few areas of Australia where in the US we are spread out. Easier to tackle a problem when you can focus your resources in smaller areas. Also, it is summer time in Australia now. Along with that, in the US, the "rules" are all over the place where many do not make sense. We cannot gather in a church but we can in Walmart? Many of our leaders creating these rules do not even follow them and also, governors cannot create laws like they are, it takes an act of congress either at the state level or federal level. Really, in the US at least, this virus is being used to control the public and many Americans do not like that.

It is very complicated. S. Korea, New Zealand and Japan are all islands and thus isolated from the world. You also have a difference in culture. In the US we have a long history of taking risks and it is how we became a nation and grew. Think about it, we first colonized this land by people loading up on a big boat and going across the ocean. We became a nation by fighting the strongest army at the time. We expanded by loading up our wagons and traveling across the land, mountains and deserts. All of that placed people in very high risk of death, but they did it. So with this virus many people do not see it as a threat as it is rooted in their nature. As a whole, though, there are many factors at play.

Really hard to compare. First, you have the issue of culture. The US has a culture of high individualism and risk taking. Next, Australia is an island with the 3rd lowest population density in the world. They shut down their borders which is easy to do when you are an island. Even at that the lock downs still led to a recession and Australia, like the US, saw an increase in depression.

@nerag7459 I understand all of that. Even with that you can concentrate your resources in a limited area where in the US we really can't. Also, to add, it is summer time in Australia. During the summer in the US our cases were down as well.

@Bradley2806 just 5 cities that are close together, not like the US were people live in NYC, and then over 3000 miles away in LA, or in Seattle, etc. In Australia's case it is easier to get resources to those cities due to how close they are.
