There weren't higher taxes on the rich in the 40s. The top percent are seeing all this income growth because they are the ones that are becoming more productive. At the same time it doesn't mean those at the bottom are worse off. More affordable wealth is being created for them to obtain. How much money you have means nothing if there is nothing to buy. If the "economic wheel" wasn't turning then the top 1% would be making as much as they are.
