The US has 320+ million people. Healthcare is 1/6 of our economy and our economy is around $20 trillion. To radically change something that is 1/6 of our economy with a country and an economy as large as ours is not simple. In fact, it is nearly impossible to do without completely destroying the economy to a major recession. Also, saying "everyone is covered" is a very low standard to go off of. Covered with what quality? The government does not have a magic wand.

People who say medicare for all will be cheaper do not understand economics and believe in magic.

carl dean, that is not a fact. What you stated is not based on any kind of consistent analysis.

Noob Attempts, a few things 1. So you feel private individuals cannot negotiate? 2. You feel the government can negotiate well? 3. Say you had your scenario with the two hospitals. Say you have Hospital A and Hospital B. Say B has a lower prices, but A has buddies in Washington DC so the government pays for care out of Hospital A despite the higher price. That is a special interest.

David Voss, it isn't that easy. Those countries have many shortcomings.

Novusod, exactly. Also, raising taxes that high will lead to a major recession. You create an environment, economically, that is unpredictable as businesses have no idea how the general public is going to react to the new tax increases and new healthcare system. Healthcare is 1/6 of our economy. The housing market is around 5% of our economy and look at how bad the recession was after that bubble. Now imagine healthcare.

David Voss, if you look at every objective measure in healthcare the US is no par with every other nation statistically. Now you may say it isn't and look at raw stats, but with raw stats you are ignoring several variables. If you look at multiple regression models the US will be on par with the rest of the world and at times better. The reality is that healthcare is a very complex field and very few fully understand it. That is why you see vague statements about it in these comment sections such as "other countries do it better" or what you said in saying "the fix is very clear". It isn't clear. The people who suffer the most in either system are either the very very poor or the very very sick. In the US I do admit that the very very poor do suffer with bankruptcy or simply not receiving care. But the very very sick do well, even those in the lower middle class. In other countries the very very poor have access, but the very very sick end up suffering with inferior care on advanced techniques. So when you say " but we have the distinction of having the least efficient health care system of any modern industrialized nation", that is simply not true. The fact is that other countries are not better. Not saying they are worse, just saying they are not better. Every country has shortcomings and the reality is that the US needs to work with the system it has, not completely scrap it to replace it with a system that has just as many problems.

"And as automation is set to take over more than 38% of the workforce by 2030" New jobs are created. Think of how many job technology has taken over the past 100 years. The tractor replaced the farmer. My dad worked at a battery plant where rechargeable batteries on board on devices took that job away. That is the evolution of the economy. It creates new jobs. If we had your way we would not have advanced technology out of fear of people losing jobs.

Jon Smith, healthcare is 1/6 of GDP. Military is around 3% of GDP. Also, the military is already in place. The cost of those war are much less than healthcare.

"Why do you think that Europe has cheap medicine? " Less R&D, inferior care on advanced techniques, longer wait times.
