Democrats are also guilty of creating laws with fancy names to hide the "disgusting things" behind it. There is something here, why should people take certain days off? The world doesn't stop just because it is a holiday. Labor day seems like an excuse for people not to work. Kyle listed certain things that unions supposedly came up with. Once again, the world doesn't stop on holidays or days off. Also those success stories of unions were either destructive to the economy (min. wage, 40 hour work week, regulations) or would have happen without unions. People naturally strive to work less. Unions didn't have to do that. All unions did is make it harder for those at a disadvantage to improve themselves. Someone who is willing to work over 40 hours a week can't. Someone who is willing to take less pay to work can't. To Kyle everything is either good or bad. He never mentions anything bad about unions. He never mentions anything bad about the min. wage and goes as far as to say that anyone who doesn't support raising it is a moron. You want an example of a union that is bad? Look at teacher unions. Right to work means you can work for more. If you are earning less than simply work to earn more. I almost joined a union job but opted out because I didn't want them holding me back. I can earn more because of right to work. You can call me greedy or what you want but I am working towards working less than 30 hours a week but still making 6 figures. I am working towards setting my own schedule and owning a nice home and doing well. Folks, stop asking for handouts and start working. You are not entitled to anything. Kyle shows in idiocy again.

sharper68 The world doesn't stop on Labor day. I seen plenty of people working on that day as well. So why does one group of people get off but not others? Seems like a sense of false entitlement here.

Chris Bowden All labor unions did is create a Christmas list of demands in the work place and had the government create laws in their benefits at the expense of others. The world doesn't stop on weekends and holidays. If someone wants to work a weekend, or over 40 hours a week, or earn less than the min. wage to simply get a job then why shouldn't they? If you yourself want to work less and earn more than develop a skill to put yourself in that position. I use to work every weekend and holiday but after time I earned those days off. Teacher unions are a reason why our education system is struggling. Teachers care more about themselves than the actual children. The average person works 32 hours a week, the percent of those making at or below the min. wage has been dropping and sits at 4.7%. People naturally want to work less and earn more and will push to do that, we didn't need unions to do it. Actually most of the poor don't work fulltime, there is a nice percentage that don't work at all. And most low wage workers are not poor. The average household income for those making $9.50/hr or less is over $47,000/yr. You create this picture of people who are suffering and can't survive unless the government mandates something but the fact is that it doesn't exist except in a few extreme cases. Those extreme cases are usually worse off because of the government funded by unions.

Seth Erebos I am sure there is more to the situation than what Kyle is making. As in what is the job market like for right to work states? What is the cost of living? What is their productivity? He is cherry picking a stat here and doesn't get into that much detail for a reason.

MrSERGEANT100 Not many people work 80 hours a week.

Seth Erebos Once again the world doesn't stop during a holiday. So who should get a day off? I hear criticism of restaurants being open on Christmas? So what. I worked on Christmas and Thanksgiving before and then had dinner at a restaurant due to not having enough time to make dinner. It happens. If you don't like it than get another job or quit.

sharper68 Why do you compare us to other countries? No other country has the resources we do (even though we don't use them). No other country has the diversity that we do. No other country faces as many problems as we do. The US leads the nation in technology research and development. Plus, why can't we be different? Why can't we push for something better? I guess if you want to go with the crowd and do the bare minimum then fine, I personally want to develop a country where everyone can do well. Plus we are slightly above average in terms of hours work per person when compared to other OECD countries. For a country that doesn't offer those things people do get time off. Your mentioning of slaves is a weak part of your argument. Slaves were forced to work. You don't have to work.

sharper68 My argument on the resources and diversity is that the US faces challenges that no other country even comes close to facing. We are a very complex country. What works in those countries isn't necessarily going to work in the US. The problem with the government forcing holiday pay and other time off is that production will come down. Things don't appear out of thin air, production has to come from somewhere. And the world doesn't stop just because it is a holiday. What you create with force time off is a society where people only work if they want too. That isn't good and won't work in a country the size of the US. You complain about the US being third world. Factor in the issues we face with the US has the best education system in the world, especially post secondary. We have the best healthcare quality, we are number 1 in research and technology development. We are only 18th in debt per capita. For a supposed 3rd world country we are doing pretty well.

Chris Bowden Why should there be overtime pay? The 40 hour limit just prevents people from wanting to work more to earn more money. Someone who is struggling or trying to do better won't be allowed to work more simply because a company won't be able to afford overtime pay. It is just like the min. wage, it just eliminates certain workers from the work force making the disadvantaged worse off. Businesses do want to pay less for more work but competition doesn't allow that. If a business won't pay someone enough then that person can get a job at a place that will. If they can't then they simply are not worth that much in the market at that point. The percent of workers making at or below the min. wage has been dropping and sits at 4.7%. If it were so true that businesses are going to pay little that number will be higher. The average wage is over $24/hr. If businesses really wanted to pay less than that number will be lower. Competition for good labor drives up wages just like competition for business drives down prices for better goods and services. You haven't told me any facts because you seem to have nothing but emotional fear tactics.

OrthodoxAtheist Factor in the issues the US has to deal with we do have the best healthcare quality in the world and arguably the best system in the world. The US is number one in responsive care where other countries do have longer wait times. In comparison to Canada (as told by a colleague of mine who is from Canada), Canada's system, like most socialized systems, is great for basic care as if you are pregnant or need a basic checkup. But for specialized care as in cancer care or an MRI or surgery, especially elective care, it is terrible compared to the US. That is because healthcare is rationed out in those countries. There are instances of individuals not receiving an MRI in proper time in the UK and then dying. While it is rare it does happen. They only problem with the US system is cost which is made worse due to government involvement. But in the US people have the option of specialized care and don't have to wait months to get it. The US is great in education especially post secondary. There is a reason why the US gets so many immigrants come to the US to work in the universities here. Also the US ranks 1st in research and technology development. Our strong university system is because of that. Working with a student from S. Korea he praised the education system here in the states. He said it was better than in S. Korea. The US is diverse like this. Hop on a plane in Oslo and in 2 hours you are in London England. Hop on a plane in Minneapolis, MN and in two hours you are in Dallas, TX. You are still in the US by in a different state. Both MN and TX have a larger population than Norway. People are different in each state, especially when you consider states as far apart as MN and TX. Growing up in the Midwest and them moving out west it is amazing how different it is. The US is pretty much like 50 countries in one. This goes which what I am saying that you really can't compare the US to other countries, we are too complex in so many way.

sharper68 That 37th ranking is weak considering that WHO ranking places high emphasis on access but not as much on responsive care or quality. It is simply this, in the US you can put yourself in a position to afford high quality of care. In the other country to do that you need to be really rich. Other than that you have the same low quality care as everyone else. I would rather put myself in a position to where I can afford high quality of care but don't have to be really rich to do so. Our secondary education system is falling apart because of teacher unions. We have teachers that are more concerned about having a job and getting paid than actually doing their jobs. The students who suffer the most are the disadvantaged. Teachers don't want to work or be challenged, they want a pay check. We already spend more on education than any other nation and you want to spend more? The US is diverse. In Canada they have around the tenth of the population. The US has size and diversity. We have more people in CA and about as much in TX. As I said the US is like 50 countries in one. Also most of the population of Canada is near the border making their size deceptive. How do you also rank comfort and happiness? The US is very comfortable and happy. I have no clue what think tank generators you are talking about, I don't read any of them. As I said, if other countries had to deal with the issues we do their situation will be different.
