Australia has a higher cost of living. Brazil colleges are not that great.

In other countries they restrict the number of students that can enroll in college. In other countries the people who they only consider to be the best and brightest can attend. Others go to trade schools. Also, if Brazil can do it, how about you go to college in Brazil. See how well of an education you get there.

We have arguably one of the best education systems. Our university system is very strong. That is why the US is number one in international student enrollment.
2
Paneled Juggler And more people will go to college to get worthless degrees. That increases demand. The college loan program did the same thing Demand was increased so colleges just raised prices. Bernie doesn't even understand his own plans.

Dylan, in Germany they only allow the best and brightest to go to college. In the US we allow everyone. So in Germany if you had a bad childhood were at a disadvantage at the beginning then you are not allowed to go to college. In the US we have options so if you went to a poor K-12 school you can still work to succeed.

killerbee256 What "right wing talking points" did I spout?

Rocket Scientist, how does one not pay off a debt in over 30 years?
1
Rocket Scientist Nice way to avoid the question. In the end it does come down to personal responsibility.
1
Rocket Scientist For the most part it is.
1
Rocket Scientist What kind of debt? A home is far more expensive. Also, at what age do they die? I can die driving today at the age of 29 and have debt.
1
Rocket Scientist Again, you have no answer.
1
Rocket Scientist These people are in debt because of their own fault.
1
I should not take that long to repay your loan. That is the fault of those seniors.
1
Niklas Hansen Almost everyone qualifies for college already, especially with our JC and CC programs. That is good in a lot of ways because someone coming from a poor K-12 education background is allowed to better themselves. With your mindset people who are screwed at the beginning are screwed for life........sound familiar?
1
If states were to fund CC then fine, I can see that.
1
Why does it take them over 30 years to pay off a college loan?

TheReasonMaster123 What is your standard for a strong education system? High scores or productivity. We are one of the most productive nations in the world.
1
TheReasonMaster123 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_hour_worked I know it is Wikipedia, but other sources have similar rankings
1
TheReasonMaster123 https://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=LEVEL Your chart does not include PPP. Cost of living is different in other parts of the world. What I gave you does and it has the US ranked 4th.

Except, the federal government giving away loans is not capitalism.
1
Ochser, why do you want to bankrupt the country and ruin the quality of the university system in the US?
1
Ochser Defense spending less than 4% of our GDP. College education spending is greater than 2% of our GDP. You can't just cut defense spending and expect it to pay for college. Also, the barrier with college is that we lack skilled workers such as professors and TAs to offer the education. You will be increasing the demand for college without increasing the supply, thus it will cost money we do not have driving our debt even farther.
1
Paneled Juggler What Kyle fails to mention is that other countries track their students. Thus if they feel you are not able to make it in college they don't allow you to go limiting enrollment. In the US we allow almost anyone to attend. So unless you want to restrict the number of people who can go to college making it so people who were at a disadvantage as a child are not allowed to improve themselves as an adult, then fine.
1
Ochser I work at a university. We lack professors and TAs as is. If you have the skill set to work that job you typically go private to earn the real money. European countries restrict the number of students that are allowed to enroll.
1
Ochser I told you that colleges will just raise prices due to limited supply. How are you going to account for that? If it were as simple as raising taxes then fine, I will support it. But the reality is that the price of college will go up when you increase demand but do not increase supply. Bernie has no clue how do to basic math.
1
Ochser 170 economists is less than 1% of the total number of economists in the US. Not really strong support. Also, I have never seen such a list.
1
Paneled Juggler Other countries have restrictions on the number of students who can attend. Also, they are not doing "dandy". There is a reason why the US has the most international students in the world.
