Not really. Cases and deaths are going down. We are at a point where we have to have a serious discussion on what will cause more harm, this virus or a bad economy? As long as cases and deaths, at least, seem to peak, we should re-open the economy within the next week. It won't be all chaos. There will be two groups of people who still won't act with society much. The current unemployed and those who are simply scared. What you will see is that many businesses will open, but they won't see many customers. This is true in places like bars, night clubs, restaurants, etc.

True. We are at a point where we have to ask ourselves, what will cause more harm? This virus or the bad economy? I say re-open the economy within the next week. Even as it consumption will be low as many are unemployed and many others will still be scared.

@MERLE1593 , not really. More information is out and some research suggests this virus is not as deadly as was originally thought. Also, you have to consider what will be worse for the people, this virus or a bad economy? Suicide hotlines saw a spike in calls recently. Also consider that if we open the economy now many still won't interact as they are either unemployed or scared. Bars will still be empty, so will restaurants, night clubs, etc. But it is a start. Also, in 1918 technology was nowhere near what it is now.

Jeffrey Hagelin we are peaking. Over the past few days, at least in the US, we are seeing the flattening of the curve. Hospital beds are open and we have to actually cut back on medical staff as we now have too many. We are at the peak and showing signs of dropping nation wide. Maybe you should reassess your conclusion.

Jeffrey Hagelin which experts? And no, they are not saying that long. Those who are are foolish. You can't keep the economy shut down that long as more people will end up worse off due to the poor economy. A recent study out of Germany suggests the virus is not that deadly.

@paulpierantozzi the federal government cannot force states to shut down. I find it funny how leftists called Trump a fascist when at this time he can act like one and force all states to shut down but he did not. Instead he let the states decide. So what is it, is he a fascist or not? If he would have shut down every state you guys will be calling him a fascist. CA shut down first because they were one of the first cases. But there is evidence that the virus was there in November and considered an "early flu season". But go ahead and blame Trump. At this point I have learn not to listen to leftists as they are all over the place. They will call Trump a fascist but when he does not enact some federal regulation you want you will call him an idiot.

Also, many states don't have stay at home orders and are doing fine. This virus is actually heavily concentrated in the New England states.

@paulpierantozzi yes you would. Just like people called him racist for calling it the Chinese virus and he placed a travel ban. There is no winning with you guys. For years you have been calling him a fascist where at this time he could have gained power in shutting down the nation but instead he left it up to the states. He placed the travel ban in early February. That is the extent he can do. Why didn't other states follow suit? Also, that are plenty of states still open who are fine. Most states who are struggling are in the New England region. Trump listens to scientists. I recommend you do as well. Recent research suggests this virus is not as deadly as people think.

Many will die due to the bad economy. These are the hard discussions many don't want to have but at some point you have to weigh the pros and cons.

@sagisli the country is not leading the world in infections and deaths when you take population into account. Nations with more deaths per million, San Marino, Andorra, Spain, Belgium, Italy France, etc. There are several in front of the US. That is even with us over stating the numbers (such as someone with coronavirus dies is listed as a coronavirus death even if the cause was coronavirus or not). Trump did well, he let the states handle it. The reason why is because every state is experiencing this issue differently. Most of the cases/deaths in the US are in the New England area such as Connecticut, NY, NJ, etc. Newsome is just lucky he is in an area that was not hit hard. Also, there is evidence to suggest that the early flu season in CA was actually the virus. Thus people in CA already experienced the virus and built up an immunity.

@americanscarelines2757 I did. We are flat line. We have around 2300 today but we had that much a few days ago. Prior to that we had a situation where we went from 1100 to 2000. Please learn how to read statistics.

@BookerT48 happiness is relative and deals strongly with culture. You can't quantify happiness. Also, just because you are happy does not mean you are in the best case. Consider a homeless guy who finally gets a studio apartment, they are happy. Now consider a guy who owns a home, loses it and has to reduce down to a studio apartment, they are not happy. But with culture, look up Hofstede cultural dimension. Compare Norway, Denmark and Sweden to the US. Look at the masculinity measurement. The numbers are very low for those three nations but in the 60s for the US. A low masculinity means the nation is feminine which means their culture value doing good for society. A masculine culture is a competitive who look up to success. Now there are pros and cons to both. While sure, a feminine culture may be "happy", but communist nations are also feminine. Russia is feminine as they are comrades that serve when their country calls. Many may say masculine cultures are greedy, and sure. But to obtain success you typically have to cater to someone. For example, Bezos became successful by providing an easy way to shop for many Americans. Or consider myself. I am a PhD candidate. To get a PhD I have to do original research and publish it carving out new information in the science world. So it goes beyond universal healthcare .

Trump is offering hope. He is talking about re-opening the economy May 1 in some way. The issue is that he is doing what is correct. Not freaking out and letting states handle this. Most of the cases/deaths are in the New England area as is. With that in mind we should start considering opening up the economy in many states.
