  1. Human hair is just the same keratin as any other wool. And why do they make the mats that thick and heavy? Most oil spills are just thin films, it would be a lot more effective to make sheets (rolls, whatever) of thin felt to cover the spill. Thin felt will also be much easier to wash afterwards and recycle.
