You might like to explain that your KCSG (Knight Commander of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great) was conferred by none other than Saint John Paul II. It had nothing to do with the British royal family.

Surely it is no stranger than having banknotes that feature people who have been dead for generations, if not centuries.

They had one back in 1999. The vote for a republic was 45% to 54%, and the republicans were a minority in every single state.

@suej9329 I think it was the former British prime minister James Callaghan who said that there were three words to strike terror into the heart of may republican in the British Labour Party - "PRESIDENT MARGARET THATCHER".

@carmie9759 The last three polls on this question produced the following results:- Ipsos - December 2022 Republic 54% Monarchy 46% Resolve Strategic September 2022 Republic 46% Monarchy 54% Guardian Essential September 2022 Republic 40% Monarchy 37% Undecided 20% The problem here is that under Australia's mandated voted system, nobody can be undecided. It is illegal to abstain. Then there is a second problem. If the new Head of State is to be a ceremonial figurehead, then why change? If you are electing an executive president, then automatically you are asking voters to choose the least bad option. Chirac or Jean Marie Le Pen? Vote for the crook, not the fascist. Macron or Marine Le Pen - ditto. Hillary Clinton or the other one - don't vote for the qualified woman, choose the lying, philandering, lazy, stupid bigot. Oh dear.
