  8.  @Fordnan  Define "democracy". If "positions of public power" are effectively up for sale to the candidate with the most money , is that democratic? If governments are coalitions of different parties, leaving them vulnerable to the machinations of special interest groups, is that democratic? If a winner-takes-all sytem is in operation, and minority interests are ignored, is that democratic? Stop spouting slogans, and accept that while the concept is fine, it is difficult to operate.

  9.  @Fordnan  "France has the capacity to improve" - it has been trying for over two centuries, and what it has ended up with is an imperial presidency. Macron is on his second term. He cannot run for a third term, and so he no longer finds it necessary to court public opinion. He also knows that he was elected as president because, primarily, he was NOT marine Le Pen. For the socialists and trade unions he was the lesser of two evils. That is how the Fifth Republic works. In the UK, the monarch is a unifying figure; someone who embodies the nation as a whole, and not merely one segment of the nation, with partisan views and agendas.

  16. You don't get it, do you. The French have postponed the state visit because it can hardly go ahead when there is, effectively, fighting in the streets. King Charles has not said that he was unwilling to go to France. This is not the 45th President of the usa - unwilling to visit a War Cemetery because it's raining and will spoil his coiffeur.
