  3.  @Camille_Anderson  Many of the earlier Irish immigrants to the USA spoke only Gaelic, and were Roman Catholics entering a predominantly Protestant country. They were NOT welcome, hence the signs "N0 Irish need apply". Similarly, in England, the nineteenth century view of the Irish tended to be of an apelike, drunken brute who was best kept away from decent people. Evidence of this exists in the cartoons of the day.
