  1. Sir Oswald himself disputed this. His argument was twofold. Firstly, in 1940 Sir Oswald was only 44 years old, and probably too young to be appointed as "de-facto dictator". Secondly, judging from the approach taken in Bohemia-Moravia and France, the Nazis tended to favour elder statemen who commanded a degree of respect from the conquered population. Sir Oswald believed that a compliant government could have been established under David Lloyd-George.
