  1.  @Tourist1967  He was not. In Churchill's day party leaders were selected by MPs, and MPs only. The idea of giving the party membership a vote never arose.

  2.  @Tourist1967  It might help if you tried to make sense. Churchill was appointed as the head of a wartime coalition government in 1940 because the Labour Party refused to accept anybody else. As a wartime leader he was outstanding, but by the time he got back into power in 1951 he was definitely showing the effects of the stroke he had suffered in 1949. There were further episodes in the period 1950-1952, an then a severe stoke in 1953. By that time it was quite clear to his cabinet colleagues that he was no longer fit to lead the government.

  3.  @Tourist1967  I do not know what you are trying to say, but let me explain this VERY simply. In 1940 it was quite clear that Chamberlain had lost the confidence of much of his own party, let alone the opposition. At that time, the Labour Party was prepared to join a wartime coalition government, provided that government was headed by Churchill. The pending 1940 elections were cancelled, and the next general election was not held until July 1945. The Conservatives did not win that election. Clement Attlee won for the Labour Party with a 146 seat majority. The Conservatives returned to power until 1951, when they scraped home with a 17 seat majority, and under those circumstances, having a Prime Minister who literally sat, drooling, in some cabinet meetings did not augur well for the party or the country.
