Prior to that, they were the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, because Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, was the son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Victoria's son, King Edward VII was married to Alexandra of Denmark, who hated the Germans because of the Prusso-Danish War of 1864, which Denmark lost. Their second son inherited the throne as King George V, and he was married to Mary of Teck, the daughter of the German Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. Mary of Teck was brought up entirely in England, and her second son was the present king's grandfather, ruling as King George VI. George VI married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the daughter of the Earl of Kinghorn and Strathmore, meaning that Queen Elizabeth II, was half-Scottish. Queen Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, from the House of Sonderburg-Glucksberg, which is a cadet branch of the Danish House of Oldenburg. From this rather convoluted blood line, it can be seen that King Charles has considerably more Danish than German blood, and that after Queen Victoria's death, the ties binding the royal family to Germany weakened considerably. Indeed, one of Queen Victoria's grandsons, Leopold Charles Ddward, Duke of Albany and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was declared a traitor peer in 1915, and subsequently lost all his British titles.

Australia mandates voting, with the result that its governments reflect the split nature of the society and are notoriously unstable. The State of Israel allows for a proliferation of parties that results in larger parties being held hostage by smaller, unrepresentatively radical grouplets in short-lived coalitions. The United Kingdom operates a first-past-the-post system that effectively freezes out third parties, unless they happen to be regionally based. Belgium frequently produces election results that are so complicated that even coalition building becomes impossible. Then there is Italy - 69 governments since the end of World War II.

He also has a number of foreign decorations, and may actually be wearing some German medals as a gesture to his hosts.

A further six countries have affirmed support for the monarchy, although in the case of Australia, that may change. Five other countries have reserved their position for the time being. Get your facts right.

Then there is Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the full brother of King Salman of Saudi Arabia, and the king's half-brothers, Princes Abdul Ilah, Mamdouh and Muqrin.
