We don't have to label depression as biological to spread awareness. We just need to start taking mental health more seriously. It would be just as easy to build a case that all disease stems from the mind, as to argue that depression is biological. Just think about the word "disease"...dis-ease. Hence, we might say that disease isn't "caused" it's "enabled" by a weakened defense system that's fully regulatable by the mind. The feel I get from Saplosky's work is that human beings don't have as much control over their actions/fate/health as they think they do. The truth may be just the opposite. Note: I do entertain the idea that something like diet (also) has a bearing on mental health.

@bananewane1402 You would if medicine actually did what it's supposed to do and cure disease...or manage it so that it can be cured by other means. Permanent medicating is the great lie of the West.

@dalpaengi That's all fine. What I'm saying is that there ARE people out there who are just being lazy and we have to account for that in our social theory. Also, I don't put anyone else under a microscope that I don't also put myself under. I've been here almost half a century and accomplished nearly zilch. I have to carry that fact and look it in the eye.
