@jonmacdonald2193 Nobody said anything about worshiping anyone. Peterson is transcending conventional patterns of thought and providing glimpses of an underlying structure of reality. Nietzshe shattered our false conceptions and now Peterson's trying to reveal the truth of the matter.

@mreyesxix Yeah, I think Blackwood mentioned something about reading what's most transformative. There aren't enough hours in the day anyway. There are about a dozen books that I owe my life to, including Man's Search For Himself (Rollo May) and The Road Less Traveled (M. Scott Peck).

@lifewasgiventous1614 It is because reason isn't the natural faculty for human beings to address and deal with reality. Emotionality is the default.

@lifewasgiventous1614 We certainly need both, although I tend to want reason "holding the reins." I was only saying that emotions are natural but reason must be synthesized through conscious effort.

@lifewasgiventous1614 I agree with almost everything you wrote but the bottom line is that emotions are far more likely to get in the way of reason than vice versa. But, yes, emotion is essential to the human equation and shouldn't be stigmatized by society. Bruce Lee asserted that everything needs "emotional content" and that we should strive for a balance between emotion and reason (the natural and the unnatural) like you say. But one must still govern the other, I believe. Too many people these days think problems can be solved with emotions at the forefront. I disagree.

@lifewasgiventous1614 I think you're alluding to the idea that self-control is more important than either method of approaching life (emotion or reason). Or that emotional control is a better idea than removing emotions from the whole process (problem-solving, decision-making, etc). I agree and my life is living proof of these things. The problem is, such discipline is in short supply in this world.

No, read very specific books...be extremely discriminating. Start with the existential psychologists of the 50-60s, someone like Rollo May. Also, put a lot of emphasis on the classics. But spend more time thinking and digesting than reading. Go deep, rather than wide. Peterson and I have a similar library, although his is more extensive.

@redwarrior01 And sometimes the call is just to throw yourself into the deep end. I'm sure even 12 Rules for Life has some intense reading in it.

John Lovitz was pretty good in this.

Does anyone have info on the symposium being chaired by Blackwood this spring. Lots of big names on the bill.

Does anyone else want to pack up and move to Savannah to go to this guy's school?

This is a throwaway comment and it makes me wonder about youtubers, given the fact that it has almost 500 upvotes. Of course anyone is going to vary their wording so as to not sound like they're resorting to a schtick. The reality is that Peterson's brilliant but he's a bit fixated on certain ideas and bends them into every discussion, sometimes inorganically. I like him best when he's off-script, feeling out his own thoughts about the shadow or some obscure myth. That's where Peterson really shines. The hierarchy bit gets old, important as it is. And his idea of criticism = encouragement seems a little warped. Nevertheless...

@HotPinkst17 Except that university is becoming a religious institution with a very pointed agenda.

@HotPinkst17 Great! I assume you didn't go to school in Canada or on the American coasts?
