39:13 - best moment "We would have to acknowledge some dark things about ourselves in order to start helping."
21
Believe it or not, there are other sources of equal or greater value. Lex is just a biased human being like the rest of us.
11
@rdklkje13 Women (through ALL history) should have gotten more credit, yes. But they didn't used to be as credit-hungry either...that's important to note.
5
@john 7 Dude, you're trolling every thread on this video. How much free time to do you have?
5
This is the most disturbing comment section I've ever seen. When the voice of reason becomes a scapegoat, just wow.
5
These guys are way more alike than you think. You'd probably get a lot more out of the Shapiro-Yang talk.

@BlacksmithTWD My sources come and go. I like Russell Brand, but mainly because he's informative and entertaining...NOT that I think he cares about my freedom or well-being. I follow the Dark Renaissance at the philosophical level...along with other "liminal web" and "metamodern" groups. Used to like Schmachtenberger and the game B group, but too much social engineering there. Zak Stein is probably one of the better thinkers out there at the moment. And Lex is okay, when he's not in "hippie love" mode (I particularly enjoyed his talk with Sean Kelly). The good news is that everyone's interviewing everyone these days so it's not hard to find content of this format. I personally find the obscure stuff more candid and thought-provoking. The machines will be biased, too.
3
Can you list me one (1) valuable thing you learned from watching this?
3
It's a great line but it justifies manufactured "artists" for one thing. Originality is dying and such requires artists to step out and start a new conversation. I guarantee you Bob Dylan wasn't concerned with the running conversation. Explode the equation.

@40yearoldvirgil15 For someone--especially an older person--who hasn't been exposed to the virus, the vaccine is worth the "minimal" risk. Otherwise, maybe not so much. But the secondary--and not insignificant issue--is that people don't like being told what to do. It's not difficult psychology to realize that the Left is purposely moralizing the issue and admonishing the Right in the specific interest of getting them to NOT take the vaccine. But you have to think.
2
It's because they're both betas (pretending to be alphas). Gotta stick together.
2
@CrazyyCanadian Yes, that's a weak argument--it's just not MY argument. I was responding the the OP (re: civility) and saying that if there isn't any alpha energy in the room there's not going to be any real aggression, while alluding to the idea that these two guys are more alike than different on the inside. But for the record, I'd gladly engage in a debate with either of these over-hyped fast talkers. I see right through them. (Note: I also see right through guys like Andrew Tate and Justin Waller)
2
@BlacksmithTWD I really can't in good conscience because I know they all have some bias (i.e. agenda) or another. The point here is to vary your sources and compare the information being given. And not to take any of it too seriously.
2
@JamesWilliams-jf3hd I doubt anyone has criticized Trump more than I have, but I'm glad you found something amusing. We all need more laughter.
2
@B0Davis It sinks in but it's filtered through your worldview and many opinions get conflated with whatever facts are offered. If you're going to get educated in this way, utilize as many sources as possible and that way the opinions will largely cancel each other out. DON'T EVER--FOR A SECOND--BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE GETTING UNBIASED INFORMATION FROM A YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
2
@JamesDavis-xd3ci If you agree with my points then why didn't you include them in your original comment instead of just propping the idea that this channel is a safe place to get a balanced education. Seems to me you left ample room for my reasonable assumptions. Goodbye.
2
@JamesDavis-xd3ci Obviously, you don't understand the continuity of a thread and how everything links back to the original comment. We are not posting our opinions in a vacuum.
2
@JamesDavis-xd3ci Really, I'm assuming we're commenting in a thread premised by someone else and that our comments are lensed through it? Maybe we're not really typing at all? Thanks for this exercise in exasperation.
2
@kangaroomax8198 What would be the point of a billionaire product pusher wanting to relate to the commoners? How can you even ask that question?
2
@intothemoat They could sleep better at night.
2
How would that pertain to the conversation? Besides, the conspiracy theory section clearly DOES address such things, making YOU look very much like the tool.
2
We all know this industry is corrupt, but we want our drugs. We simply want to feel better, at whatever cost.
2
Lex is hardly a source for wisdom. It's all hippie "just love each other" talk.
2
Too much optimism. This conversation desperately needed someone like Yuval Harari. Also seems tragic that he thinks Ted Talks are a good place to get educated.
2
"You said so many cool words." Lex plays Joe Rogan plays random chimp.
2
Your gut biome.

It made me stop and think but only because it was inconsistent. Peterson starts off saying love is superior (which makes Lex swoon, of course) but then immediately starts talking about the ultimate value of truth, even in all its horror and cynicism...and how we need to delve straight into that. Lex is cringing inside at the reversal and finally gets enough to tie things up...but only to the satisfaction of those who weren't paying close attention. The best part was the ending quote, and the 30 seconds before that when they're talking about how literally EVERYTHING is within us. My feeling is that love is quite nebulous, and therefore a valuable tool for those with an agenda. (But Lex, himself, may just be naive.)
2
@MajorShot No, that's just some new age, law of attraction "manifesting" BS. (Yet at other points Peterson will talk about absolute truth.) Keeping a positive attitude is great, but seeing what is to be seen is essential.
2
@MajorShot I understand everything you're saying. Now imagine that you're a character in a video game programmed to think you have free will. But, in reality, everything you do is being manipulated by the person behind the screen. This person would want nothing more than for you to adopt Peterson's attitude. I don't see life as bad OR good. It just is...or it isn't. And some days death holds far more intrigue.

The 'other' Hoff

@ben5154 What makes you think it would have been ANY different?
1
@40yearoldvirgil15 I would have written less had I known I was conversing with a six year old pretending to be 40. Have a nice day.
1
@40yearoldvirgil15 I must have really struck a nerve!
1
Is she a feminist? Or is she only human?
1
@zippastills5668 Did God send you to warn us about Daniel?
1
Should he defend Hamas's atrocities and crimes?
1
It's too bad because both of these guys COULD be likeable, if they weren't such DBs on certain topics and issues. Instead, they're just two well-concealed beta males with inadequacy issues they'll never tackle.
1
Completely redeems himself with the radio analogy. Exquisite.

Coordination isn't cooperation. Large scale coordination has only really worked when a centralized authority directs things. That authority is just less tangible with a country like the U.S. (but it's there). True cooperation is still limited to small groups of much less than 50 people. I would also argue that a nation CAN (and does) suffer when it gets hit with something that affects every citizen (Covid, 911, etc). Loved the point about AI needing to be clearly identified so we know what we're dealing with. I wonder what it will feel like to be the first person who unwittingly has sex with an AI?
1
@TheSirOtt I've been liking Chris Williamson lately, although it's difficult to nail down his politics. Russell Brand is good for "in the moment" stuff, but don't take him too seriously.
1
@TheSirOtt Alexander Beiner (formerly of Rebel Wisdom) has a pretty good newsletter.
1
@reprehensiblereptile187 He's also not very relevant. What's with all the alien content?
1
Then why smile?
1
Does every podcast have to include aliens, Lex?
1
It's no way to become a specialized expert, as the algorithm doesn't identify your #1 interest and focus in on that. And too many people get hooked on the idea of having some knowledge about everything so you end up with a world of dilettantes. So unless you can find a way to integrate that knowledge and do something at the macro level, such as write a novel. Fiction is a rare field that allows you to incorporate all manner of random knowledge. But it's not for the feint of heart.
1
@jay_tripp IF it sticks.

I like Solomon a lot, but I think he's putting all his eggs in the wrong basket. Infinitude seems to me a bigger challenge for humans, as opposed to finitude. And the thought of dying at any moment does little more than produce anxiety for me. I think children have it figured out. They tend to disregard time and live (i.e. play) as if each moment is an eternity unto itself. Isn't it?
1
Lex doesn't seem to know his audience very well to have a guy like this on.
1
@bloviatingbeluga8553 Lex doesn't get to choose his audience, they show up based on content. To this point, he's largely captured the Joe Rogan crowd which is adverse to socialism (understatement). It doesn't take much to alienate people these days and there's not a big enough pool of open-minded people to try and appeal to a diverse audience. People are rooted, ideologically. Just look at how poorly this video performed.
1
@briankunkel2754 See, I think you have to be willing to duke it out sometimes. Comportment is important but there's a time to throw down the gloves. At any rate, I'm glad you got a lot out of the debate. I truly can't handle either of these guys anymore (and the fast talking just makes it worse) so I honestly didn't watch it. But I will say that I'm very careful about my content and rarely watch anything that devolves into senseless mud-slinging. There are many examples of civil debate and in case you missed it, Shapiro-Yang was a good one.
