  10.  @ramonserna8089  Not a "self" loathing, as I don't believe Nietzsche ever identified with his natural weaknesses. I think he saw himself as highly misfortunate, which makes it all the more impressive he developed such an affirmative philosophy. But it had to be hell knowing that he himself could never become his "Overman."

It seems to be part of the deal, and I would argue that we are very little--if anything--beyond the sum or our experiences (and our interpretations of them).

  21.  @1videoormore  You're confusing critical thinking with critical theory. Critical thinking is about the ability to penetrate an issue and get to the truth of the matter. Such as by genuine philosophical analysis of different historical works (hint, hint). It's not about being cynical or skeptical of anything and everything. That's some postmodern nonsense. Asking questions is anything but fruitless. Although you do have to ask the right questions.

  22. To all the trolls here (you know who you are): Sure, all things being equal, this could just as easily be an echo chamber as any place else on the internet. Except that all things aren't equal (and that's why we employ critical thinking skills). Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom. Politics is the art of influence and manipulation. This guy does seem to lean (slightly) to the right, but that doesn't mean he's practicing politics. The lens Joe uses to analyze historical works is quite fair-minded, and he consistently tells us not to take his interpretations as gospel. Such things aren’t the mark of an influencer. There’s much more to be said but I won’t draw this out because I know people can’t be bothered to read more than 2 paragraphs, but the bottom line is that the OP is spot-on about this video (IMO). The people that need it won't show up because they're too busy seeking material to confirm their bias. That doesn't mean that everyone here is a balanced centrist, just that the bulk of us are here to get to the bottom of things, even if that should upset our own views. The rest, apparently, are cheap trolls. Philosophy is the anti-echo chamber.

  24. Hope is cope. We should ask why today isn't worthy of its own adoration. If something is wrong with today, let's fix it...today. Then, every day will exist for its own sake, in its own beauty...not as a mere vehicle to get us to tomorrow. I believe Nietzsche would agree with me, despite his "amor fati" philosophy.

I don't have reason to believe things are going to work out for the best, but I certainly don't plan for them to fail. My brand of optimism is that something good can come out of even the greatest disaster. In fact, any time something goes wrong my mind immediately searches for a positive...and it almost always finds one. However, your perspective (re: good and bad optimism/pessimism) is better than 99% of what I've heard. If it's working for you, go with it. Just don't let your optimism ever be "blind."

Because there's a new challenge and new possibilities. Maybe you call that hope? I call it life. If you DO rely on hope, I would say to make sure you're the one generating it and you're not depending on it to come from something external. “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope.” - The Bible For me, the stronghold is my own will, faculty and ingenuity. But I do feel hope is necessary/beneficial for those who truly are helpless, such as children.

For instance, open borders are a beautiful thing, but it just may not be the right time (or WORLD) for them. As it's been better said: Conflict is inevitable; combat is optional. But go ahead, try to remain neutral about everything.

  45.  @salparadise1220  Depression is certainly real, but keep in mind it's based on a somewhat subjective view of one's life and agency. Things aren't always as bad as we think. I would also say that “believing” in a better tomorrow is different than holding “hope” for one. Let me know if that's too fine of a distinction, but it's almost like there's an inherent desperation in the concept of hope. Plus, hope takes us out of the present moment, which is where the action is. My overall hypothesis is that hope isn't just a cope, but that it often functions as a drug. As long as I have hope, what else do I really need? Hence, it can be a tragic trap of sorts, as things further decline--but at such a gradual rate that we don't notice. I think it's just better to step up and take responsibility for whatever the situation is, and take action toward resolving it. We are subjects--but not victims--of life. Meaning that life always offers us a way, as well as something in our current scenario worth appreciating. Hope feels too passive for me. Whereas belief feels more interactive, even though I can't fully control what I believe. Think of it this way. Donald Trump can keep promise us a better tomorrow and string people along with hope, all the while things are deteriorating beneath the surface (or in plain sight!). Now he's poised to do so for another four years, at which point we could be past the point of no return. All in the concept of hope...all because we WANT to believe. To keep it all very simple: make your own hope. “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope.” - The Bible For me, the stronghold is my own will, faculty and ingenuity. But I do feel hope is necessary/beneficial for those who truly are helpless, such as children. Man, I have a lot to say on this topic.
