It's only heartbreaking because you get the feeling he wishes he was no longer here.

@DrCruel Yet when you read Fromm, you're hard-pressed to find anything he says that doesn't make sense. And as for his political hue, I think you'll find it closer to that of someone like Rollo May (a fairly conservative guy) than Marx or any true leftist. Or maybe you can point me differently?

@DrCruel I'd like to continue this discussion, but you'll first have to decide whether I'm "too far gone." Both of those Fromm quotes resonate with me, particularly the first one. Plus, I consider Libertarianism to be the fundamental political stance ("don't mess with me and I won't mess with you"). Right now, it's you--not Fromm--whom I hold under suspicion of being an ideologue. When I read the afterword to 1984, I get the sense that Fromm really cared, in the same way I get the sense that Ayn Rand really cared (believe it or not). Were these two people born into a particular historical context that colored their political beliefs? Sure. But their thoughtfulness is undeniable and both were pure progressives in the sense that they both wanted to advance humankind. You seem to believe that the evidence is all in and that capitalism has proven itself effective and socialism ineffective (evil?). Both of these assertions are false. In fact, I'd say that 8 of 12 jurors on each panel are--at current--voting against socialism AND capitalism, respectively. That said... Has capitalism ever been implemented in a properly regulated way? Has socialism ever been attempted on a large scale free of the influence of communist authoritarianism? The human experiment will likely conclude before we get a final verdict on either front, as it's not our differences but our similarities that are killing us.

@engineeredtruths8935 There's a lot of pathic energy in/from Peterson. Gnostics would not approve.
