Dr Ellie, I recently came across some studies showing that a simple baking soda rinse simply raises the pH of the mouth, but is not actively antimicrobial. The study concluded that a cheap homemade baking soda rinse can be beneficial to people who have Sjogren's syndrome and hypo-salivation. So I guess my question is, why do you recommend against baking soda? I think you've mentioned that baking soda disrupts a healthy biofilm. Would you be able to explain the mechanism of action? Currently, I'm not using baking soda in any form and I'm using Xylitol mints instead but still I would love to properly understand your exact rationale for advising against baking soda.
