Lord Cameron? Lord Balfour? WTF is a ‘Lord’ in English society?

@freestylegamingartist8192 It was not rhetorical. Usually we only hear the word ‘Lord,’ as a reference to God, or perhaps in the context of the Middle Ages, people would say ‘Yes, my Lord.’ How does someone in modern society get that title. It can’t refer to just being a land owner. David Cameron was prime minister some ten years ago. What did he do to obtain the title of Lord?

@freestylegamingartist8192 Thank you for the explanation. In the US, we don’t have any of these titles such as: Earl, Duke, Baron, Lord, etc. They sound comical to us, like they’re from the antiquated era of feudalism or something.

@freestylegamingartist8192 Thank you for the explanation, but are you talking about very large quantities of land? In the US land ownership is very common, in the sense that people own a house and the small plot of land that it resides on. Is a lord someone who owns thousands of acres? Why even give that title to someone today? It seems it’s just a measure of wealth, is that correct? If so, it seems like a classist title. As it declaring to the entire society that you are important because you own a lot of land. That’s very different that how we do things in the US.
