@PlasteredDragon Was it really the church itself or was it the surroundings that changed? When the Catholic church stopped being the only cohesive element in Europe and rulers would stop always abiding by it then it certainly couldn't start things like the crusades. I believe it's the changed political circumstances that explain why Martin Luther was not burned like the Jan Hus 100 years earlier, former was support from political forces that stopped giving a damn about the holy see.
