+CLINT MENGOLLI I doubt that you actually calculated the likelihoods. You have no basis for making such claims.

+Tim Petzold > And there's no reason to suppose that anything would really get to 'be' in such a fundamentally different universe Is there reason to suppose the opposite? I don't see how.

+KaraisBubliee > if you know anything about our bodies and how they work Our bodies are adapted for here, his point was that our bodies would have been adapted for something else through evolution.

+Jacob Pando > if the chances of finding one should be very high accoding to science? Who said that? > it's that if the laws that govern science were true What "laws" do you mean? And again who said that? > It also shows that requirments need to be met for life to exist Nobody is doubting that some requirements exist but the possibilities might be hard to imagine, e.g. not that many decades ago it was assumed that no bacteria would survive inside our stomach (due to the acid) or in extreme conditions you will find in some places on earth, so apparently a lot is possible. How much is possible? I don't know but neither do you so you would not be justified in claiming that life on other planets is outright impossible.
1
+joshua sedano A lot is possible, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremophile And what we currently see here on earth might not be what is generally possible, e.g. we just have carbon based life forms here but that does not tell you whether totally different life forms aren't possible as well.

+joshua sedano Ah, so you are connoisseur of les papiers scientifique, that's great, in that case check out 10.1039/b800164m or 10.1128/JB.185.13.3683-3689.2003 (those are DOIs but I am sure I don't have to tell you that). > There is no hope of intelligent life if you have extreme heat or cold because due to genes itself. That's a claim you haven't substantiated with evidence.
1
> so you suggest that there are sentient beings out there that can stand intense temperature? No. But I do not see good evidence to the contrary. I wouldn't feel justified in saying that it's impossible. > do you see an intelligent life form that can stand above 50° Celsius? Time and location wise you are only looking at a very small subset of the possibility realm. > If there is intelligent life out there that can survive intense temperature they would have populated almost all the exo planets. Maybe yes but maybe intelligent life does not survive long enough. ;) Seriously, this is just speculation. > if water cannot handle the heat it will be 100% inhabitable for life. Huh? I guess you meant uninhabitable. And again just because all life we know depends on water one way or another does not mean that it's a necessity, sure it's a good guess if looking for life on other planets but that's about it.

+Justin Anstine This isn't about liberal vs. conservative (pretty US-centric BTW) but about fact vs. fiction.

+SPacy sam aku holT I just rolled the dice several times and I got the following numbers: 5 3 6 2 4 4 6 2 4 1 The chances of getting this exact sequence are 1/60466176, isn't that incredible? Ain't I special? Texas sharpshooter fallacy, baby!

+Carter Berthiaume Nobody is saying that it's guaranteed that "we" would have existed under such conditions, just that it can't be said to be impossible because as we know from here on earth life is very adaptable and a lot is possible.

+xDark Star117x > 8 planets that can sustain life Life as we know it.

+Domen Podgoršek Life as we know it…
1
+BlackBricksStudios No, nobody said that it's possible to exist under just any circumstance (and at any time).

+BlackBricksStudios Quoting Douglas Adams here: "This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in — an interesting hole I find myself in — fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!'" Did the puddle adapt to the hole or was the hole made to have the puddle in it? Obviously the former. Now does that mean that a puddle can form anywhere even if let's say the hole was 90° and in a wall? No, obviously not! Puddles require certain circumstances to form, they don't form instantaneously, they don't last forever and yet they are quite common. Is it clear now?

+kite man And? You are telling us why life as we know it wouldn't be possible, but not whether life unknown to us wouldn't.
