Ancient buggy on Debian are a real problem, my advice is to not use Debian for desktops (and for servers only if you really know that the packages you are using are actively maintained, e.g. web services often AREN'T). Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Ubuntu with Gnome as the desktop manager are neat IMHO. But yeah, video editing is always going to be a hassle, in fact compared to even photo editing, 3D modeling and such I would argue it's where free (copyleft) software on Linux is currently really the weakest.
