Normally when we talk about things we always consider the median to be representation. That doesn't mean that something Is rigid, in fact hardly anything is. (The average) X is A as opposed to (the average) Y that is B doesn't mean that all kinds of intermediate steps between A and B exist (i.e. that the borders are fluid).
