The most liberal Muslims have to jump through quite a lot of hoops (and ignore a lot of oral tradition, the "hadiths" and creatively interpret certain single ones) to come up with nowadays sensible interpretations on what is an apostate and what to do with him/her, when what form for hitting your wife might be permissible, whether slavery is truly to be abolished… (same applied to Judaism/Christianity as well BTW, which makes me optimistic that the same might be possible in Islam, good thing average Joe or Ali prefer to get things spoonfed instead of reading themselves)
