The ticket to longevity in these engines is knowing what to listen for, and not procrastinating when you hear it. At 110k miles my expedition developed a faint clatter just for a second at cold startup. Right then I started buying the parts I knew I would need to do the timing set. While it was apart I installed a Melling oil pump and new roller followers. That was about 50k miles ago and the engine is still as quiet and strong as the day I first drove it home. Just don't gaff off little ticking noises and rattles, or oil changes. and the motor will last a long time. Also, go with 5w-30 full synthetic oil rather than 5w-20.

@gregdiiamond3899 many of the issues with the 5.4-3 valve can be solved with a better oil pump. Why Ford decided not to put a high volume pump on such a large engine that uses roller followers and aluminum cast in head cam bearings is beyond me. When I first heard my expedition rattle at startup I changed all the timing gear; tensioners, phasers, VVT solenoids, everything. And while I had the engine apart, I installed a Melling HV oil pump and replaced all roller followers. With the exception of the oil pump, all replacement parts were Ford Motorcraft. Long story short, when you hear the rattle, fix it immediately and completely. Chances are, if to that point you've been keeping up with correct service intervals, you'll be just fine.

@deez_pucks4709 Ford Tech Makuloco has been a Godsend for me. Followed his recommendation on installing new roller followers and a Melling HV oil pump for the 5.4-3 valve in my expedition when I did the timing gear, and that engine runs as strong as it did the day I bought it. Thanks to him, I knew just what to look (listen) for.

'06 Expedition. Started hearing the clatter for a second on startup about 110k miles. Did a complete timing job replacing everything except the oil pump with Ford Motorcraft OEM parts. Installed a new Melling M340HV oil pump, and since the valve covers were off I went ahead and replaced the roller followers too. Put it all back together, and upped the oil weight to 5w-30 full synthetic. That was about 20k miles ago, and I gotta say, this motor runs as smoothly as it did the day I drove it home. Shout out to FordTechMakuloco for suggesting the Melling oil pump and roller follower swap.

@mphilleo not as bad as "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. That's a stalker anthem.

The Grim reaper in the dashboard says it all.

The Triton 5.4-3 valve uses aluminum cast in head cam bearings which are particularly vulnerable to aluminum shavings. If the oil filter did its job it should be OK. I would definitely replace the oil pump though. Melling makes a great high volume aftermarket unit. I have one on my expedition.

As long as it's making noise you know it's working. When it stops making noise, that's the time to worry.

You can lead a horse to water, but anyone who says you can't make em drink never tried salting their oats.
