  1. The ticket to longevity in these engines is knowing what to listen for, and not procrastinating when you hear it. At 110k miles my expedition developed a faint clatter just for a second at cold startup. Right then I started buying the parts I knew I would need to do the timing set. While it was apart I installed a Melling oil pump and new roller followers. That was about 50k miles ago and the engine is still as quiet and strong as the day I first drove it home. Just don't gaff off little ticking noises and rattles, or oil changes. and the motor will last a long time. Also, go with 5w-30 full synthetic oil rather than 5w-20.
