@gregdiiamond3899 many of the issues with the 5.4-3 valve can be solved with a better oil pump. Why Ford decided not to put a high volume pump on such a large engine that uses roller followers and aluminum cast in head cam bearings is beyond me. When I first heard my expedition rattle at startup I changed all the timing gear; tensioners, phasers, VVT solenoids, everything. And while I had the engine apart, I installed a Melling HV oil pump and replaced all roller followers. With the exception of the oil pump, all replacement parts were Ford Motorcraft. Long story short, when you hear the rattle, fix it immediately and completely. Chances are, if to that point you've been keeping up with correct service intervals, you'll be just fine.

@deez_pucks4709 Ford Tech Makuloco has been a Godsend for me. Followed his recommendation on installing new roller followers and a Melling HV oil pump for the 5.4-3 valve in my expedition when I did the timing gear, and that engine runs as strong as it did the day I bought it. Thanks to him, I knew just what to look (listen) for.

The Triton 5.4-3 valve uses aluminum cast in head cam bearings which are particularly vulnerable to aluminum shavings. If the oil filter did its job it should be OK. I would definitely replace the oil pump though. Melling makes a great high volume aftermarket unit. I have one on my expedition.
