@Ellie5621 go back to the video and look at 1:25. The door was broken open. At that point the assailant is in the house and the father was smart keeping the door between himself and the assailant. Plus, he shot through the window in the door, so it wasn't blind fire. The only person in this situation that had the option of making it a non lethal encounter was the assailant. And he failed.

@coldfireball6384 @oscar is correct, at least for a good portion of those who served in combat. You learn a lot about yourself when being shot at. For example, I learned that everyone has a givashit switch, but not everyone knows where it is, or how to turn it off. I was fortunate. I figured out both. While I don't like the idea of killing another human being, I know in a similar situation I could flip my switch, drop the hammer on someone menacing my family and still sleep like a baby at night.
